Why I Want To Be A Midwife

For me, choosing to be a part of the midwifery community was not as easy as it may have been for others. The naturopathic profession was not a part of my upbringing. I grew up on antibiotics and doctor’s appointments until I was old enough to realize that it wasn’t solving anything. I knew I wanted to walk my own path, but I wasn’t certain what that was. When I left school, I didn’t follow my dreams; I simply followed the familiar. For many years I have been drawn to the medical field, but fear kept me at bay. I realized while I may be excelling, I was doing very little for myself because of that fear.

I’ve spent over 10 years working as a nanny across the United States. I became interested in the position because of the lively environment it provided and because I have always had a desire to help and care for people. During my time working with families, I often found myself wanting to be apart of their experience from the beginning. I want to be able to empower women and their families to have the pregnancy and birth that they desire.

One quality that I admire about midwifery is that it is a lifelong learning process. I am eager to have the opportunity to educate others and myself and to witness the progress that the midwifery community continues to strive for while impacting the lives of families along the way. This potential for continuous learning and development is what will preserve my passion for midwifery for years to come.
