Why I Want To Be A Mentor

I wish to thank you for the opportunity to apply and be considered for the mentor program. It has been a huge goal of mine to be a part of the program since I first learned about it in the sixth grade. I would like to ask you to reconsider the decision to not include me in the program. As you may know, sixth grade was extremely difficult for me. The adjustment from elementary to middle school was much more challenging than I could have ever imagined, and I know that my grades, attendance, and emotional health showed that great trouble I was having in a very obvious way. However, it was the goal of becoming a mentor, in large part, that helped me turn everything around this year, to become the student and good example to others that I knew I could be. When I was having so much trouble last year, my mentor was not really able to give me much useful help. Maybe that was because she could not understand why I was having difficulty. This is why I feel I would make a great mentor. I understand how hard the transition can be for some students. I have not had the success that sometimes comes naturally to others. I have had to work very hard for it. …show more content…
I very much like helping others, and because of the difficulties I had last year, I feel I would be even more capable and excited about it, if I had the opportunity. Also, I feel somewhat frustrated seeing who was selected for the mentor program, when I know that I am just as capable and probably twice as motivated. I desperately do not want to lose this opportunity of possibly being a mentor due to mistakes that I have made in the past, or be overlooked because of a shyness that I very honestly feel that I do not

My junior year in high school, I became a student mentor in our campus’s peer counseling program. This was an incredibly rewarding experience as I had the opportunity to help freshman students assimilate into our high school dynamic. As a peer mentor, I assisted students with personal problems and mediated issues with teachers in order to maximize their learning experience. I also acted as a role model for my mentees by talking frequently about AP and Honors courses and how to be successful in such programs. I put effort into learning about each individual's interests and goals so that I could expose them to clubs and academic courses that they may appreciate such as the Biomedical Academy or our school’s robotics team.…

An experience that displayed my ability to mentor was during my time helping out at Columbus Elementary School. There was one boy named Presley and he had trouble focusing, so I often ended up at his table trying to draw his attention away from his peers and towards his work. He was struggling with math, subtraction specifically and heavily relied on finger counting to do any problem. After about two weeks doing number lines and tally marks, he greatly improved and no longer needed any help for simpler subtraction.…

Do you know what city contains the longest beach in Ohio? It is Mentor, Ohio, containing Headlands Beach that is approximately one mile long. I chose this city because I have lived in the area my entire life and enjoy the many fascinating attractions the city offers to the community. Not only do I appreciate the city but my entire family also lives in Mentor, and I would like to live near them. Although Mentor is a fantastic city, I wonder if problems with the population of Mentor will affect traffic or pollution and cause families to become distant because they don’t want to travel through a populated city?…

Sixth grade for was one of my most difficult years of my life so far for a few reasons. First off, sixth grade was my first year of middle school, meaning a whole new school, new school system with class schedules, lockers, multiple teachers, and having passing periods were all new concepts for me to grasp as a kid. More importantly however, the second reason sixth grade was so difficult for me was that over the summer leading to that school year, me and my family left the Catholic church that my mom’s family had been going to for about a hundred years or so, and it was a completely different environment for our entire family because we spent the entire summer up to the first week of school looking for a new church in our area, going to a new…

I would really love to be able to come and hang out with them and get to know them more. While this is a hope of mine, I have never told any of them that I would do it because I don't want to get their hopes up. Honestly, I wish they had a volunteer opportunity where we could come in and hang out with the youth as a whole or in smaller groups to continue the relationships. I don't think I would be able to say yes to mentorship just because of my schedule and I wouldn't want to let them down.…

I originally thought that by just being there for someone you were a mentor. I now know through this program that mentoring involves giving both tools and advice to effectively help your mentee. The relationship with a mentee is somewhat different than a relationship between friends. There is a sort of bond that occurs from helping the student but the student holds you to higher standards than a friend would. I am excited about mentoring next semester because I want to hone my mentoring skills even further be able to help my mentees in a more effective way.…
