Why I Want To Be A Lacrosse Player

That is, I could until I was pushed onto varsity as a sophomore. Instead of getting the steady playing time I expected, I was only permitted to enter the game when things got out out hand. Frustrated, I asked my father what I could do to earn a reliable spot on the field, and he told me that if I augmented talent with practice and outworked the rest of my teammates, there would be no reason for Coach to keep me off the field. Desperate to play, I followed his advice, alienating team members along the way while I gave 110% in practice, refusing to give them the free pass they thought they deserved.
When I finally got to take the field in a game that was already out of reach, I didn’t roll over like most of my team; instead I exploded onto the field. It gave my game a whole new depth of emotion. I intimidated the other team purely through the determination that I channeled, and my knowledge of that fact stirred an entirely new sensation within my chest. My work was beginning to pay off, and I became determined to replicate that feeling.

In a defensive position, I would have to relearn my skills with a stick that is twice as big and learn new strategies and techniques. In that position, I had to hit the reset button on almost everything that I had been doing before. My desire to play and my new willingness to work, however, overrode my fear of failure. I took my 100% and made it into 120%, spending hours every afternoon after school perfecting my footwork and throwing a ball against the

Growing up in the United States the individualistic goals of our society are incredibly apparent. The whole premise of the American Dream is to do well for yourself, to raise your own family in your own home with your own car. I broke my ankle my last second from last game in 8th grade running the ball and got tackled and fell hard on it breaking my tibia and fracturing my fibula and tearing all the ligaments in between. I had surgery on it.…

I started my soccer career, if you could call it that, as a carefree kindergartener. Soccer at the time was just the thing that preceeded the real event, the postgame snack that would traditionally consist of cupcakes or Oreos and a juice box or occasionally the god-awful apple from a health conscious mother. So how is it that this sport would grow to become one of my greatest sources of joy and pride? This pride I speak of has not come from any particular standout skill; I am by no means a soccer maestro, in fact I am no stranger to the bench. Yet my time playing soccer has brought about a satisfaction that is unrivaled by any of my other various enterprises.…

In all my years of growing up, I was raised to be a strong, mature adult with enough perseverance to go around the world. In all complete honesty, that is how everyone in this world should be raised; having the strength to push through the absolute limits without passing the thought of giving up or throwing it all away due to weakness in the mind. Giving up is something that should rarely visit the human brain unless it is completely necessary; it should always be a last resort. From a personal experience of rejection and pushing through excruciating pain along with all the limits it had to offer, I was able to learn that one small mistake should never be falsely accused as a final failure. Along with this, I was also able to identify my true self and who I really am…
