I’d had been diagnosed with severe hearing loss when I was only 18 months old but we kept following up every six months in hopes that my hearing would naturally improve on its own over the years. I still remember that moment at my checkup because it hit me the hardest when we were discussing about definitely placing a cochlear implant because on my left side because the hearing aids were not helping me. I was at the therapist’s office because they wanted to make sure I was emotionally ready to undergo a surgery to place a cochlear implant in my head which would completely kill any chance of restoring normal hearing functions down the road later in my lifetime. The therapist asked me to identify what was making me angry and I told

I did an online search on “Computer Science” and “Cochlear Implants” and I was overwhelmed with the amount of information that Google and the Gale database had returned to me. I did not know where to start but I started clicking on random, trusted sites that were maintained by professionals and companies that dealt with hearing loss. The book “Deaf Like Me” by Thomas S. Spradley and James P. Spradley intrigued because it was about a hearing family that had a deaf daughter. I was also interested that the book was written in the perspective of the father. The statistic that vast majority of deaf children are born to hearing parents has always made me fascinated with what each hearing parent has done for their deaf child. I knew that this story would most likely have a happy ending considering the title “Deaf Like Me” I made the inference that maybe his daughter would find inclusion from being emerged in the culture of deaf individuals. “Deaf Like Me” followed the story of the parents Tom and Louise Spradley in the early 1960s.…

Also, the hospital has a unique feel about it with a plethora of health professionals around that I may see a larger scope of practice as compared to the cases I would face in a different setting.…

Another reason I chose computer science is because computers are shaping the direction our world takes and I want to play a part in that. The idea of writing a program that helps a physicist decode the secrets of the universe or a doctor discover a cure for a serious disease holds great appeal for me. Computer science is a continually growing field and with computers becoming involved in almost every aspect of our lives it should remain so for the foreseeable future. Thanks to computer chips imbedded in everything from basketballs and shoes to computer-controlled thermostats more and more computerized data is being produced daily and to manage the acquisition, storage and use of this data will require computer scientists [1]. While sending jobs overseas will slow some aspects of computer science-related job growth overall computer science jobs are expected to continue growth through 2020 [3], [4], [5].…
