When I first started taking the Social Services program, I was sure I would continue my education afterword’s at a university. Over the course of the academic year, I have grown to realize that I want something completely different than my original plan. Along with discovering more clearly what I would like to accomplish in my academic future and in the field, I have also become more familiar with ways to keep my personal life and career separate from one another. One drastic change I decided to make, was to finish my two year Social Services program and not go to university after I have my diploma. I am capable of completing university; I just realize that it is not where I need or want to go next. Originally I wanted to be a social worker, …show more content…
The continuous emotional pressure with people- that comes along with this career choice- left my energy level feeling depleted. A contributing factor to what made me feel so burnt out was feeling overwhelmed during the busy time of the year, with assignment, volunteering, and trying to use the skills I have been learning out in real situations. It is extremely important to me that I work through the stress that I carry and not let it affect my work and wellbeing. Learning to recognize when I am feeling stressed before I get to the point that I have nothing to give is imperative. Some solutions I want to remember to try are to examine my behavior and if it is helping or hindering me. To ask myself if I continue that way, will I end up stressed and burnt out. One example I really liked from the text book, was to remind myself that just because I can do something does not mean that I should do something. I am not always required to be a part of every situation, get everything completed on my to-do list in one day, etcetera. I cannot be all things for all people, or always be available at any time. I need to remember to set a limit for myself to set aside time for self-care. Two activities that help me to cope with stress are yoga and running. When I have assignments to complete,

William Deresiewicz claims that in the neoliberal world we live in, the market mentality drives students to attend universities purely to obtain higher paying careers, rather than to expand knowledge. This article describes how students are most interested in practicing majors corresponding with the highest salary jobs: “the most popular majors are the practical, or … the commercial ones: economics, biology, engineering, and computer science.” Today, parents invest in college with hopes to make larger investments back, due to that fact that an individual’s worth in society is based on their wealth. Students no longer attend college to question and reflect on the world, but rather to rise on the social ladder. Deresiewicz believes “college is…

A reason why I would want to go to college would because it would help get me to places I want to be in life such as helping me get a good paying job or th position I would want. Another reason why I want to go to college would also be because I want to see what it is like to attend a college and at least try it out. As a high school senior, the question I am most used to hearing is, “where do you want to go to college,” and my habitual response is the Wharton Undergraduate School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. But I think that the more apt question is “why do you want to go to college?” Personally, I want to learn. The Wharton motto of “knowledge for action” embodies this desire to learn and use this knowledge to pursue a career in something that engages and interests me. I am an aspiring investment banker and international business executive and am intrigued by mergers and acquisitions, investment banking from an international perspective, and the effect of international events on the global economy and the ensuing effect on corporations.…

Growing up in Vietnam and moving to the U.S. in 2012, I decided to go back to school to pursue my degree. As for many immigrants, I follow the “American dream”: getting the education, landing in a dream job, and making a decent salary. With determination, I keep track on the academic journey and constantly strengthen my major, which is accounting, my chosen study for life time career.…
