I am a first generation high school graduate and college attendee. Despite my parent’s lack of educational and financial stability, they do everything in their power to support my education. However, my parents are foreign to America’s educational system and as a result I do not receive much academic guidance from them. My parents have taught me to work hard for what I want, to understand that there is a difference between failing and giving up, and most importantly, to be humble and grateful for everything that I have. I am proud to be a Hispanic- American that has the opportunity to fully indulge myself in both the Hispanic and American cultures.…
After I graduated high school, my academic skill levels were not ready for me to enter college. I failed all of my replacement tests and have to take the lowest level of English courses along with other subjects. It took me about two years to finish all of my English classes in college. At the same time, I was shuttled back and forth between work and school to pay for my expenses. It was hard to stay focus in school while working, but at the same time, I didn't know what I want for my future.…
Ten years from now, I plan to still be in college. My parents have always wanted me to get a good education and in order to get the jobs I am wanting, I will have to go to college. In 20 years, I expect myself to be a doctor or a lawyer and possibly a mother also. Plans have been made for me to also live by my best friend when i'm older.…
As a non-traditional student I chose to pursue a bachelors degree years after high school. At a young age I had developed an interest for earth science. However, uncertain of my specific discipline, I was confident the experience of core science and electives courses would help me find my passion.…
My ambition to attend college originated from witnessing my family's academic choices. My mom dropped out of school before her freshman year, and my dad left college in realization that his occupation does not require any further education. Since their education was lacking, my parents never had a good job to support my family, which resulted in severe poverty. My older sister was the first person in my generation to apply to college. She applied to a local community college in my area, and later dropped out.…
College is an important milestone in everyone’s life although it’s not for everybody. The reason why I originally decided to go to college was because my parents told me it was what I needed to do after graduating high school. But now I am in college because I don’t want to end up like my parents working a dead end job and living pay check to pay check. So I want to have an actual career and live a comfortable lifestyle.…
My main source of motivation has always been my two beautiful little girls. I intend to always be a great role model for them and show them that, even if they make mistakes along the way, they can always achieve their dreams if they never give up and always try. Each and every day that I wake up to their sweet smiling faces is just a reminder to me of why I must always keep pushing forward. My Purpose:…
Having had to deal with a lot of turmoil in my life, especially within the last 6 years, with my parents passing within 18 months of each other. I recently decided to take my life back. College classes are a giant leap forward. I have my short paper, in a draft form started. I took a look inside myself to remember “what I wanted to do/be when I grew up?”…
“If you aren't in over your head, how do you know how tall you are?” ― T.S. Eliot Some say life's a journey, some call it a gift. I, for one, have always seen it as a challenge.…
From a young age, I have always had a passion for caregiving. Initially I wanted to go into the medical. I pursued this for more than half of my time in school. When I entered college entered as a nursing major and quickly changed to a math major. After being a math major I quickly lost interest when led to my decline in academic performance.…
The prestige red “R” I have noticed the big red R a great deal ever since I started attending college. Every time I drive to Philadelphia though the Ben Franklin Bridge, it has always stuck out more than usual. I am currently attending Camden county college. I’m trying to get as much credit as I can cheapest way possible. When choosing a college or university, I’m always looking for the best tuition, close commuting location, and have the major I required.…
College isn’t something that’s for everyone, my parents made sure I knew that right from the start. With no expectations of me and no real consequences at home for not trying in school, one would think I wouldn’t try, right? Wrong. I set expectations for myself, and made sure I met them. Grades and ACT scores have never been something I could show off to anyone, until now.…
After attending school for fourteen years, one would think the level of a person’s education is beyond acceptable. For me, that is not the case. Scientists have believed the brain does not fully develop until the age of twenty-five. Continuing to learn in college will not only help me become a teacher, but it help my future students. I currently work in an after school program and help children daily.…
When looking for colleges I first started by looking at some states I've always wanted to go to, for me going to college is finally being able to start developing my future and location is extremely important in that aspect. I was born in Massachusetts and after moving away we have taken a few trips back home, every time I've gone it made me fall more in love with the idea of finally being in a city setting again. The second thing I looked for was protection laws, I really need to be in a state that respects the LGBT community. Thirdly, I was looking for a school that would provide me with the best education and had an extensive psychology program, but was also realistic. I wanted to make sure my goal was obtainable.…
When I was just 8 years old, I moved from Chicago, Illinois to Aurora, Colorado. For me changing states and starting new, meant everything. When I moved I had to leave everything that I loved behind. Even if I knew that I could always go back to Illinois to visit, the idea of leaving my comfort zone scared me. Once we were finally settled in our new home, the day came to start my first day of third grade, an dit was the same day that I realized that I was a “nobody”.…
