College Admissions Essay: My Return To Berkshire Community College

I have always been envious of people who know exactly what they would like to do for a career. Sometimes they know before they leave high school and others figure it out in college. I however am still not totally sure what I would like to do. Recently, I set some goals for myself and seem to have a much better idea than I’ve ever had before. When I graduated from high school, I entered community college because that is what you were “supposed to do”. Seeking a higher education just seemed like the next step in life. Unfortunately, for me though there were a few problems. I had no idea what I really wanted to do with my life, I was immature, and I had no real goals set. After a broken year at community college, I went to work and did so for …show more content…
I am facing a job with little to no advancement and my wages are not the best. I decided to return to Berkshire Community College due to many things. It is close to home and inexpensive compared to most other schools. I also enjoy the fact of having a flexible schedule where they offer evening, weekend, and online classes. I am currently in my first semester since my return and I can say I am doing much better than I previously had. I am only taking two classes right now due to the balancing act of school, work, and family. Also, I wanted to start with only a few classes due to being nervous and unsure of how well I would do. My plan is to eventually apply to the nursing program here at Berkshire Community College and attain my license as a registered nurse. I thoroughly enjoy helping people and being involved with emergency services has pointed me in the direction to pursue a career in nursing. I am currently unsure if I will transfer to a university. That decision is a few years down the road and will have to be decided when the time comes. In conclusion, I believe I am a much better student for experiencing everything in the order that it happened. I had to go through being immature and having no goals, to gaining a lot of responsibility, and realizing that I need an education if I want to go any further in life, and attain a decent paying career. Now with goals set and in place I have the focus and drive to complete the tasks needed. Although with a lot more responsibility I have matured, and I am able to balance everything in order to attain those

When considering what career I wanted to achieve I was given a substantial amount of advice; starting with choosing something that you are passionate about and ending with researching everything you can about what you want to do. Having been given advice, and learned from past experiences that I needed to listen to all the advice. So I thought long and hard about what my dream job would be. I knew it had to be something where I was helping people. As a student approaching adulthood, I am commonly asked what I want to major in, where I want to live, and what career path I wish to take. My husband took a job transfer to Medford and as part of the persuasion to leave my comfortable life behind and relocate, he suggested it was an opportunity for me to finally get my shot at college and get a nursing degree. I settled for the ADN program because it was the fastest route with the least amount of financial burden. Although not as long as the program for BSN, it was extremely challenging for me to return to school after so many years. I had to give up vacations, family time, various social events, and sometimes even meals and sleep in order to make assignment deadlines and study for exams that could end my program immediately should I fail one. I have no regrets for the education I received.…

When I think about Monroe College, I think about chance, growth, and achievement. For quite some time, I did some research on the college and I received nothing but good experiences about the college. For example, I have a coworker that graduated from the criminal justice program with a 3.8 GPA and most importantly, she dropped out of high school, received her GED, and thought that her only options was community college, trade school and a minimum wage jobs. Knowing that Monroe believed in her and gave her the proper guidance; compelled me to apply. Right now I'm at Hostos community college, majoring in early childhood education.…

For a long time, I thought I had my life planned out. I thought I knew where I wanted to go to school and live, I even thought I knew who I wanted to marry. I wanted to be a lawyer in the military and work my way up through the ranks to the office of Secretary of Defense, and that was it: no personal life or anything else. Once I got out of my parents’ house and started to live I realized all the things I thought I want or thought I was interested in; all those things were just things I was told to like or do. I tried to stay close to what my family wanted me to do, while trying to decide what I wanted to do with my life.…
