I value the officers that serve and protect the community and it has always been my desire to have a career in the law enforcement profession. As a child, I remember a local police officer that came to my elementary school. His name was Officer Howey. Every year he would discuss a variety of topics, from staying away from strangers to the dangers associated with drugs. I always felt that I was safe and could approach him with any questions or concerns I had. He made such a positive impact on me that I knew I wanted to have a career that served the greater good.
Although, I have not held a position within law enforcement, I was a part of working for organizations that operated in the public’s interest. I worked for the Department of Defense, as a civilian service member and in my early years I served in the US Army. In both careers, I felt that I made a contribution towards the safety of our nation. However, I knew that I wanted to have more of a direct impact in the community and thought back to my earlier plan of joining a law enforcement agency.

They do it because of the personal gratification they get by knowing that they helped a person that maybe someone else couldn’t or wasn’t able to help. A big part of being a peace officer is also remembering that even when people make a mistake or get into situations they never thought they would be in, they are human beings. They still deserve to be treated with respect. I have heard from officers that they have two philosophies. One, treat people how you would want your family members to be treated and two, when taking action make sure what you’re doing is ethical, moral and legal.
