Reflective Essay On My Writing Style

No matter how many times I’ll have to write one, reflections are always difficult. They make you look at yourself and your work and dissect every good and bad aspect of it. Sometimes it’s hard because just the task of analyzing one’s own work can be tricky, but my personal biggest issue is learning how to fix what I find specifically wrong. Part of this is due to my own writing style, along with the bad habits that come with it. However, throughout this class, I have learned more about how to relay my ideas more concisely to my audience and in a more summarized form. I may not still have a lot of improvement, considering this is only a ten week long class, but the fact that I’m consciously putting an effort into improving certainly makes the …show more content…
As for how they affect my writing, it’s as simple as my writing style becoming noticeably more passionate or aggressive when discussing a specific topic. This happened, for example, in my New York Times summary of Kate Manne’s article “Why I Use Trigger Warnings”. The subjects of trigger warnings and triggering material have both become very prominent in my life over the past several years, due to both instances of over-exaggeration and of personal experiences I or friends went through. Thus, I have now developed a very specific viewpoint on the topic. Part of this attitude and ideology I have acquired is clearly prominent in my rhetorical precis when I talk about the article’s intended audience. However, despite having such strong stances on certain topics, I am always eager to learn more and listen to people speak about topics from their own standpoint, even if what they think is not what I personally believe in. Keeping an open mind is always important when going at a topic, because without an open mind, on can’t learn from their mistaken beliefs and become further enlightened about the world around

Learning how to write the English language in an academic setting has been one of my greatest accomplishments as a scholar, despite the fact that, I am still learning new skills daily on how to improve my writing. Writing has always been one of the most difficult skills that I have been learning through my college career, but it has also been the most important skill because unlike other skills writing affects my works across all courses or subjects. Writing has also helped me to get in to UMD, receive scholarships, and be accepted in research programs. Therefore, all the effort that I have made to improve my writing skill is worth it. From experience, writing is not like other skills that one can learn overnight, for me, writing skill is very slow progress and requires a lot of writing and reading; this is what I got from this class. In this class, my writing has advanced because I am reading more, practicing more, and writing more.…

When it comes to producing academic papers my writing style remains adaptive to meet the rhetorical context of a specific course. Meaning, my focus and attention is directed towards proper formatting, and writing a paper that engages a reader. My process involves narrowing in on a topic, gathering sources, free style writing, creating an outline, writing a draft, revisions, and then producing a final…

The differences between the style of writing that I do to friends and family and the style of writing to instructors are quite distinct. When writing to family and friends, it’s much more informal and not nearly as structured as it would be if I were to write to instructors. It would be similar to how I would talk to them in person and I would use words that would be deemed informal to more professional type people. When I ever do have to write to professionals such as instructors, it would be structured as if I was writing a report or an essay. Being formal when writing to people such as instructors or supervisors is necessary to seem more professional yourself.…

My mind feels like a 1000 piece puzzle missing a piece. I can’t simply find the right words to say to start this paper. It is always like this when freewriting; the idea of freewriting in and of itself frightens me. Never able to put the words in my head onto paper in a way that it can be read eloquently by others. My hands start to cramp automatically at the idea of freewriting.…

As you requested, I am writing to share my past writing experiences which include what kinds of writing I have done in school, the feedback that I seek on my work before I turn in assignments, the memories that I have of writing, voluntary writing I have done, and much more. Past Experiences with Writing Previous to this course I have taken several mandatory English, Writing, and Literature courses in which I have gained experience that now impact the way I write. In high school, I took my basic English & Writing courses, along with an Advanced Placement English IV course, in which the teacher persuaded me to join the University Interscholastic League (UIL) and compete in the Ready Writing Competition, in which I won first place in the…

I think that paraphrasing will be the hardest for me to avoid while writing. It seems that sometimes it is hard to write or summarize something that is so well written already. The way I will work around that is to stop and re-read what I am wanting to summarize, take a few important words out of the material I am reviewing and jot those down, then go back and write what is needed to complete my sentence or idea. Once I have completed my writing, I will review and make sure I have properly cited my work. Using the guidelines discussed in our “Read Section”, and following the instructions listed on how to source correctly should avoid paraphrasing mistakes and plagiarism.…

Have You Developed a System of Writing That Works Most of The Time I really have not looked up different styles of writing let alone realized there was so many different types of it. My method is not necessarily a method per se, I have always for the longest time just wrote down as if I was speaking to someone. That to me was where my biggest praise came from, that I was able to write with such voice and was able to emulate my presence through the pages. When writing for an essay there is a period where I read and reread the question to gather all the information that is needed. Once the question is fully understood, I try to explain myself in full detail.…

For some of us writing might not be as easy as for others. To me writing could be a long process of different stages that might get difficult with time. To be completely honest I have mixed feelings about writing and I don’t really have any memorable experiences that made me feel this way, it is just the experiences that I have had with the subject while trying to apply it. I struggle with what to write down mostly and creativity in general and I don’t really excel at any part of it. If I were to say I “excel” at anything it would be revising my work and adding to it. At the end of the semester I hope that I have relearned some key writing elements that lack of practice has caused me to lose.…

In high school, my teachers never had me write reflections on any of my work; therefore, I thought it was quite odd that I had to do it for this course. At the start of the semester, I did not see the point in writing reflections and really did not put much effort into them. I started to see the value in writing reflections as the semester progressed. I started to see that reflecting on my work benefits the reader and myself. Reflections allow the reader to see my thoughts on my process and writing; furthermore, reflections allow me to think about problems I encountered and how I worked past them and show my progression as a writer.…
