In her article “Why I Think All Schools Should Abolish Homework”, Vicky Abeles argues that schools should abolish, if not limit, the amount of homework given to students because there aren’t many proven benefits, and instead will harm students in some aspects. She backs her argument with the fact that studies have shown there “is no academic benefit to high school homework” after a certain length of time (par. 6). Students are also not getting a chance to rest and be healthy, instead they are burdened “with an imbalance of sedentary, academic tasks” (par. 9). Abeles also mentions that schools such as Henry West Laboratory School have “eliminated mandatory, graded homework for optional assignments” (par. 11) and that other schools should follow, …show more content…
The concept of homework was created to help students with their school work. Getting extra work for home allows students to truly understand what they learned during the day. It is additional practice for students and will help prepare them for tests and exams. Homework also teaches children important life skills such as responsibility and perseverance. Students will have to be responsible to get their homework done on time and with good quality. Even when students don’t want to do homework, it teaches them perseverance by helping them understand that some things that they don’t like will ultimately benefit them in the long run. These reasons, and more, all prove that homework shouldn’t be banned or …show more content…
Being able to have homework for after school gives students a chance to truly understand what they did that day. Nicole Shum, a current student at Dublin High School, says that her Algebra 2 homework “helps [her] comprehend the concepts that [she] learned in class” (Shum). Practicing academic skills at home allows students to fully understand what they have learned. It is essential to grasp the concepts and knowledge to be able to move on to harder things the next day. Without homework, many students wouldn’t have a way to practice skills that they didn’t fully comprehend in class. Homework also helps students raise their test scores. According to Monica Fuglei in her article “The Homework Debate: How Homework Benefits Students”, Duke University professor, Harris Cooper, says that five studies have proven that students who complete homework receive a “higher unit test score than the students not doing homework” (Fuglei, par. 8). As mentioned before, homework provides extra practice for after school hours. In turn, this allows students to fully understand the knowledge learned that day, which ultimately helps them score higher on tests. Increased test scores for students raises self esteem and provides more opportunities, such as advanced classes and even a wider selection of colleges that they could potentially go to. Homework

After reading Etta Kralovec and John Buell’s essay, “End Homework Now,” I can say that I’m of two minds about their claim that homework has questionable benefits. On one hand, I agree that homework it isn’t as imperative as some parents believe. On the other hand, I’m not sure if homework is completely unnecessary. I agree that that homework isn’t as vital as it’s thought to be, a point that needs emphasizing since so many people still believe that “If our students don't do lots of homework, their test scores will never be competitive internationally” (Kralovec, Buell).…

In Jodi Meltzer Darter’s very direct and informative Huffington Post article “No Homework Policy Lets Elementary School Kids Be Kids”, Darter informs the reader that before her children's school changed to a ‘No Homework Policy’, her children would get off the bus and immediately start an hours worth of homework. She acknowledged that she has always been a critic of the demands of elementary school children. Darter then goes into details, explaining that her kids don’t really get the chance to expel their energy during school other than the 20 minute recess. Because of the ‘No Homework Policy’ now implemented at her children's school, Darter then concludes that her children have better grades, they have the chance to be who they want to be,…

There are so many reasons people are pro homework. People say “it helps them become smarter or helps them on test,” But there is a lack of evidence where it actually supports their claims, that it helps students at all especially at such a young age. with Alfie Khon “The positive effects of homework are largely mythical.”(Khon). There are various effective arguments I would make to support students having homework by their teachers. The first argument I would make is that homework helps students to better retain the lessons they’ve learned during the school day. Students need a lot of exercises to do to retain what they learn everyday in school. Since class time isn’t enough to provide a lot of exercises on one subject, homework is the best way to exercise what’s been learned in class. If no homework is given to students on a subject that’s been discussed in class, it’s more likely for them to forget the subject the next day.…
