Why I Should Not Go Back To School Analysis

Decent Essays
As a wife of thirty years and a mother of five it was not an easy decision to return to school. I debated for years as to why I should not or could not go back to school. However, one day my pastor preached a message which has become my motto. He said “if you keep doing the same things you will keep getting the same results; but if you want different results then you have to do something different”. That message was my wake up call to follow my dream. In James W. Loewen’s Lies My Teachers Told Me, Loewen contradicts information and the way it is presented in average high school American history textbooks. United States History is taught in American high schools to inform students of the mistakes made in the past, hoping they will learn from them and not make those mistakes again. Traditionally, American students are taught the history of their nation by reading from textbooks that list and group together important facts, dates, and events. Unfortunately, students relentlessly read these groupings of facts, not taking much consideration to the content they are reading. Frequently, textbooks use heroification, archetypes, and the absence of ambiguity to cloud and omit history.…

Both Sherman Alexie’s “Superman and Me” and Eudora Welty’s “Clamorous to Learn” share their experiences and beliefs about how literacy impacted them. “Clamorous to Learn” has a much less “formal” tone compared to “Superman and Me”. While both authors use style elements in their excerpts to connect to the audience in an emotional way “Clamorous to Learn” uses antimetables and metaphors while “Superman and Me” uses repetition. Sherman Alexie narrates the memories he has as child reading, and how literature influenced him to become a writer to carry on what he learned to his audience. In paragraph seven, he says “I read the books I borrowed from the library.…

College Is Not the Key to Success In College is a Waste of Time and Money by Caroline Bird she explains how college was a good place for a few kids that were drawn to their academic work, but now it is stupid for kids to go to college when all they are doing is wasting their time and money. Bird is right, the only reason they go to college is to make their parents happy not for the education part. She explains that young adults in college are sad, mostly because they are just thrown into the real world without knowing what is going to happen next. They do not know what is best for them so they think going to college will help them get a better job in the long run. Most teachers, engineers, and even nurses said they do not use what they…

I can already hear your whining voices and complaints, but once you start writing papers, it would not be difficult to write because it is in your language.…

Everything now a day is based off number, whether it’s ones SAT scores, standardized test scores, or most importantly, ones GPA. College students, and even High school strive to reach a perfect four point zero semesters, or even acquire high honor roll. Unfortunately, according to John Taylor Gatto, and his article “Against School”, achieving that perfect semester, or making high honor roll, doesn’t always translate to receiving a honest education, but rather just schooling. I love this quote, it is a powerful thing to have the opportunity to have self-reflection and then grow into better more capable human beings. When I first read that the mid-term was a reflective response, my initial question to myself was “have I learned anything?” and the answer was “I don’t know what I’ve learned”. After some self-reflection, I have learned that I am terrible at reflecting on my experiences. It is so easy for me to say I don’t know, instead of really thinking deeply about what I have actually learned and retained, and how these things have changed me as a person.…
