Personal Narrative: My Life In Football

Improved Essays
“So Chase, are you gonna be in cross country when you’re older?” This was the big question from when I was in fourth-grade all the way up till sixth-grade because my brother and both of my sisters all excelled at running. I always had the same answer, “Nope, I’m gonna be in football because I am too slow!” I kept telling people and believing that it was true. Seventh-grade year arrived, and I could finally make the real decision. I chose to go out for football because I enjoyed it when I was younger. Wrong choice. I didn’t enjoy it at all, but I am not a quitter, so I stuck it out all year. Fast forward a year and it is the summer before my eighth-grade year, and this time I made the right choice. My brother and sister graduated the year before, …show more content…
During the race, I start out just jogging along with a couple of my teammates. After about a half mile, I start to think to myself, “I can go faster than this.” I accelerate and climb to second place. I glance up just as the lead cart darts around a corner. Half mile left. First place is only a few steps in front of me. Sharp left turn. Big downhill. I start my kick. The kid next to me can’t keep up as I fly down the hill, and let my momentum carry me all the way to the finish line. I am on top of the world. I can’t believe it, I just won my very first cross country race! Out of the corner of my eye, I see the varsity jogging over to me. Thoughts are racing through my head, they are going to congratulate me, pick me up on their shoulders, and parade me around. They’re only five feet away. They’re getting closer! They’re right next to me…and they just keep walking right by me. My stomach dropped as if I had just been punched in the gut, and I realized I had a long way to go until I would earn their …show more content…
Their cheering isn’t enough to get me going. Then I see it. My four teammates that already finished are right on the sidelines. They are dead tired, but screaming their lungs out. They finally believe in me. That’s when the adrenaline kicked in. I was at an all-out sprint. 100 meters left. The guy is 20 meters in front of me. 75 meters left. I gained 5 meters. 50 meters left. He’s just out of my reach. 25 meters left. That’s when he realizes I’m there. He kicks it in. We are in a dead sprint. 10 meters left. We are within inches of each other. 5 meters. I look and see my teammates. I burst forward and lean across the finish line. I did it. Perfect score. My teammates are going crazy. They’re shouting and hollering, and I might’ve even gotten a hug. Now I am really on top of the world. I’m grinning from ear to ear. I finally did it. I finally earned their respect. I still don’t know how we lost to Canby one meet, and perfect scored them at the next. We all had terrible runs at Marshall and great runs at Canby. Canby was the exact opposite. This was the first perfect score for Marshall Boys’ Varsity since the 2003-2004 team, who went on to win state two years in a row. A perfect score is a huge deal, and we accomplished it. Everything worked out exactly how it had to, in order to accomplish that. It really was the perfect

On your marks... Bang! That is the sound of the gun going off, and hundreds of kids running like a stampede to one destination, the finish line. Many people think that Cross Country is just a hard sport to do and think why would someone want to run for fun. Again, one by one I slowly catch up to runners who were way ahead of me at the start and pass them. One of the runners I passed that really gave an extra boost was a runner who beat me by a second or two in our last race with each other. Feeling disappointed that day, I did not want that happening again on our last race so I went aggressive, running just as fast as him side by side but once we hit the 200m mark, I pushed myself to go faster and finally was able to pass him up and going faster and faster until I pass the finish line. After finishing, my body felt dead and felt like collapsing but I was able to keep myself up and when I looked to see my time on the time board, I was super surprised to PR 9 solid seconds faster than my previous PR after getting the same time over and over again for 3 or 4 previous races. The time I got was a 5:11, my best PR during my freshman year and my proudest races.…

I have always been good at running. In middle school, I would always be the first to finish the mile long run for my Physical Education class. At that time, I often ran the mile in seven minutes flat; I was always at least thirty seconds ahead. It was the same outcome in high school as a freshman; however, that was not the case as a sophomore. As a sophomore, I ran the mile in seven minutes, but another sophomore, George, would run it in six minutes and fifty seconds.…

There I was, anxiously waiting for the guy at the starting line to shoot the gun so we can begin our journey to the finish line. After what felt like a lifetime, the gun went off and everyone took off like a stampede of wildly angry animals. I began sprinting while remembering to count to five in my head, slowly declining to a fast jog, then to a slower jog with big strides. Some of the other girls and I played tag for a while, they passed me and I passed them, which was the start of the race to the end. The pack of runners turns a corner and my legs nearly collapsed when I saw what was ahead, a very slow yet steep inclined hill.…
