Why I Should Be Chosen For Camp

Decent Essays
My past leadership responsibilities have taught me that admitting my mistakes and showing humanity betters myself as well as those around me. My peers trust and have more faith in me because I have demonstrated humanity to them instead of acting as if I am perfect. This allows fellow students to approach me for advice when they have problems because they know that I am willing to help them as well as be their voice if they do not feel comfortable presenting the conflict.

I should be chosen for Camp because my commitment, work ethic, and dedication to my school, community, and athletics have awarded and prepared me for this opportunity. I am a different type of leader because I am not an outgoing person, which is usually a characteristic

My heart is beating quickly, my mouth is dry, and as I look at the familiar faces in front of me, their judging eyes make them seem like strangers. I struggle to get them to quiet down and we begin our hour long sectional, which I have to lead. It was the first day of my third year in marching band and at the end of last year, with the graduation of the previous section leader, I was granted his important position. Being a competitive person, I was extremely self conscience of how my section made me look. I hated being blamed for their errors and was exceedingly harsh towards them during sectionals.…

This course taught me some very valuable skills that I have been able to practice in order to grow as not only a leader, but as a person. I have had past experience with leading small groups because of being a peer mentor, a freshman retreat leader and a kairos leader; however, leading larger groups proved very difficult for me on kairos and when I came back to school fully focused on the year ahead of me rather than the kairos experience that took up a lot of my attention I was able to learn, through faith in action, some skills for leading small groups. Through urban plunge practice, we saw both successful and unsuccessful large group leadership tactics. We both talked it over and put it in to action with each other in order to refine our…

To me leadership, as quoted by Jack Welch is, “Before you are a leader, success is all about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is all about growing others.” Before becoming a leader, you are just working on the tasks assigned to you; doing the best what comes naturally to you like running a project and meeting deadlines; in essence, growing yourself; focusing on your weaknesses and strengths and trying to improve yourself than before. Then all of a sudden, after your promotion you become the manager, all your responsibilities gets changed as you are the boss now. You have to lead people in order to achieve the desired goals of your organization.…

My understanding of intellectual disabilities has expanded because now I am able to relate the specifics from our textbook to experiences I have had while helping at Younglife’s Capernaum camp, for special needs individuals. I was surprised to read in our textbook that limited intellectual ability is defined as a score of 70 or less on intelligence testing. The Capernaum camp experience is for anyone with a disability, whether physical or intellectual, and the range of issues spans greatly when we are at camp, because so many regional groups come during the same period of time. A couple of times a year I am the camp nurse for the group, and the camp is about an hour away.…
