Why I Should Be Allowed In High School

Improved Essays
Many kids in middle school do as many activities and extracurriculars as they can and by the time they reach their freshman year they’re told that they have to choose what they like best and focus on that and only that. I was one of those people. Ever since I was a little girl I was in every sport and activity you could think of. Dance, volleyball, basketball, swimming, band, I wanted to do all of it but the reality of the matter was that I couldn’t. I had to choose only one. How could I do that? How could I pick only one thing to do for the rest of my high school career? The idea was too dull for my taste. I needed more time in a day. By my freshman year I had narrowed down my options to swimming and band. They were what I enjoyed doing the most and I absolutely refused to only pick one. I had a few options: I could only do concert band, which would make it easier to do both because by the time concert band begins, swim season ends, or I could make my life more complicated and attempt to do marching band and swimming. Guess which one I chose? For some crazy reason, I decided to make things harder on myself. I had taken fairly easy classes and decided to …show more content…
I knew I had to go back and see if I still have what it takes to be on the team and to challenge myself a little bit in my senior year. That summer I trained incredibly hard to try to get back to where I was my freshman year so that I would be ready for tryouts. I was insanely nervous but I did surprisingly well and prayed that I would make the team. I got the news during summer band rehearsal that I snagged a spot on the team. I practically screamed and jumped like a child who got a puppy for christmas, while everyone just stared at me like I was crazy but I didn’t care. I was excited. How many people can say they haven’t swam in two years and still made their high school swim

Upon enrolling in high school I realized that I could no longer put an average effort into easy class work and be rewarded with academic satisfaction. After joining the honors course along with band and the FFA, it was revealed to me that high school was a different culture than middle school. I quickly discovered that hard work would be required to be successful in everything I will ever do. Band demanded countless hours of practice, but I ultimately gained first chair in the top band, as well as squad leader over the trumpet section. Like band, the FFA required hours of dedication, but I distinguished myself from other FFA members.…

As my senior year approached, I imagined it would be difficult to choose what I wanted to major in. Interestingly, this perplexing question was already a part of my everyday life- I simply needed to look closely enough. When this question arose, I was a junior who spent the vast majority of her time binge watching YouTube videos, and wasting time online. Regardless, I still let this decision stay in the back of my mind during my leisure time. I asked myself this question: “What is that one thing that you do all the time, that you cannot see your life without?”…

Intellectual theory is based on cognition and learning. The way in which a person learns directly affects his or her development process, and educational/career path. (Capuzzi & Stauffer, 2012). It's important for a counselor to recognize that there is no one-size-fits all approach to learning, and that each student may achieve certain levels of cognition differently. Felder & Brent (2005) note that different backgrounds, strengths, ambitions, and levels of motivation all contribute to different learning styles and their outcomes.…
