Personal Statement: A Career In Early Childhood Education

One of the most frequent questions I get asked is “Why do you want to be a teacher? They don’t make that much money.” Sometimes I ask myself the same question then I can think of a million reasons to be a teacher. Being able to help people and make a difference in someone’s life is what I have always dreamed of doing. I knew I wanted to be a teacher starting at a young age when I would go to school all day, then go home and play fake school with my sister every day. I was always wanting to help her learn and motivate her to do better, and that’s when I knew I wanted to spend the rest of my life being a teacher no matter what the pay because in the end that’s not what it is all about. For them, they won’t even know what that means and they don’t need to worry about them at such a young age. As a teacher, I can go by the content standards while doing fun things with the children such as learning songs for memorization as well as some other things. As a teacher, I feel I will be using behaviorism and constructivism the most. Using behaviorism in classrooms with smaller children such as kindergarten and first grade it is important that you have control over your students because they can and will walk all over you and it is our job to not let that happen. By using behaviorism, I would use it by giving kids a sticker on a paper for a good grade, or giving them a prize at the end of the day for good behavior. I also think constructivism is important because in a classroom full of five and six-year-olds it is hard for them to keep their focus and they will not sit in a chair all day and be lectured.
