I didn’t know how to care for someone that is on tracheostomy, so I look up my textbook for reference. Through my textbook, Medical-Surgical Nursing, I learned that “Tracheostomy care keeps the tube free of secretions, maintains a patent airway, and provides wound care…Perform tracheostomy care according to agency policy, usually every 8 hours and as needed” (p527). Also, I learned from the textbook that the importance of nursing intervention for patient with tracheostomy is: prevent tissue damage at the tracheal mucosa; ensuring sir warming and humidification to prevent tracheal damage; suctioning to maintain a patent airway and promote gas exchange; and prevention of infection. This is very important information for me because I will know what to do when I have another patient that is on tracheostomy next
