Nursing Home Reflection

This week was the first time I am debating whether I should be in the clinical or staying at home to study the exam that is coming up. I have been study so much for the exam and I felt like I still have tons of study to do. I have always looking forward to clinical, but this time I felt like if I don’t do well on my exam, I won’t become a nurse. That’s why I have this conflict in my mind. Despite what was on my mind the night before, I drag my tired body up in the early morning of clinical day to work. I wanted to be like a professional nurse that is able to take care of the patients no matter what happened to their personal life. This week we will be take care of two patients instead of one. I have always looking forward to be able to take care of more than one patient because I wanted to see how well I can provide my care to different patients. I started to do the vital signs and assessment on one of my patient that is on tube feeding and paralysis from the chest downward. I didn’t know how to care for someone that is on tracheostomy, so I look up my textbook for reference. Through my textbook, Medical-Surgical Nursing, I learned that “Tracheostomy care keeps the tube free of secretions, maintains a patent airway, and provides wound care…Perform tracheostomy care according to agency policy, usually every 8 hours and as needed” (p527). Also, I learned from the textbook that the importance of nursing intervention for patient with tracheostomy is: prevent tissue damage at the tracheal mucosa; ensuring sir warming and humidification to prevent tracheal damage; suctioning to maintain a patent airway and promote gas exchange; and prevention of infection. This is very important information for me because I will know what to do when I have another patient that is on tracheostomy next
