Personal Statement: A Career In The Medical Field

Improved Essays
When I was younger, I always wanted to be a doctor seeing as I grew up in the medical field having a parent that works in it; I have seen all aspects of the medical field from the billing and coding all the way to surgery. I always knew I wanted to do something in the medical field, but I did not know what. I always choose to be a doctor because at a young age you really do not know many other fields besides the doctor. It was not until middle school that I began to find the love in helping people and the science aspect of things. That also is when I learned about other positions and really started to look into them. Realizing that there are more positions in the medical field such as nurses, phlebotomist, Physician Assistants, and many more. …show more content…
So I focused on keeping my math and science grades up and took electives in high school like medical terminology and a vocational class called Health Occupations. With taking the Health Occupations class I learned how competitive the nursing field was. Graduating highschool I was still determined to go into nursing so I choose to go to Oakland Community College and I did all the general education requirements and applied to the registered nurse program and got waitlisted and then I looked into their phlebotomy program and found out that they only take 12 people a year and I did not wanna wait a year to continue my education and who knows if they would have taken me that following …show more content…
My goal is to work with younger children I wanna be able to help that kid that once favorite activity was to swim and now can not, know you can still do all the fun things that you did before, just now you get to do it in a cooler way. No kid should ever feel like they can not live a happy fun life because they have a disability. In the Cathy O’keefe paper she talked about how in 1978 her twin sons required surgery and she realized that there was a lack of child-centered activities and I think even in 2016 there is a lack of activities for children that can help kids rehabilitate faster. I think that doctors are so focused on getting the child healthy and out the door that they don 't make things fun. There was this one time I was at the hospital where my mom worked wondering and i seen this lady working with this young boy and she had him trying to pick up a fork and he seemed so uninterested and bored. With I feel we can accomplish some of the same milestones just by focusing on the person 's overall well being instead of just there

Dear Carolyn Boles Scholarship Committee, I have had a great first semester in college full of learning and meeting new people. I studied extremely hard the entire semester and was determined to get the best grades possible. My favorite class was psychology and I received a very good grade in the class, so I was asked to become a mentor for the class next school year. I also decided to work toward receiving a minor in health psychology because I loved the class so much. In another one of my classes, we learned about different health field careers in order to decide if nursing was right for us since it is such a competitive major at IUPUI.…

Becoming a nurse was not something I always knew I wanted to do. I knew that I wanted to have a career in the medical field due to the opportunity for innovations in health care and the challenges for improvement. It was not until my mother’s struggle with breast cancer that becoming a nurse became my mission. As a young child at my mom's bedside, I would watch her nurses as they took care of her. To me, they were pillars of compassion, strength, and advocacy that inspired me to pursue nursing.…

I would watch medical TV shows such as “Greys Anatomy” and I would continue to fall in love with the thought of medicine and helping people with their treatment and potentially saving their lives. Working as a medical scribe in an OBGYN office this past summer has only furthered my interest into becoming a physician’s assistant.…
