Before the age of 14 I never really considered myself to be a religious person. Although I grew up in the church, my parents always forced me to go. Therefore I never really paid attention to what was being preached. One Sunday I went to church with my grandmother and the Reverend introduced a female pastor who gave a captivating sermon that caught my attention. Her story related to mine so much that I thought she was talking directly to me. From that day on I have been a devoted Christian, attending Bible study and even started counseling at Christian camps.
When I turned18, I encountered a young lady who was raped and sought me out for counseling. Finding out she was pregnant, she wanted to know if she should keep the baby or not. I told …show more content…
If I could go back to the very time that I decided I wanted to be a Christian, I would have made it my business to thoroughly research a lot of the difficult subjects that I know now. Still to this day, I struggle with living my life everyday as a Christian knowing that I don’t fully agree with all that I have come to learn on my journey. I guess that’s what they call blind faith. While out to lunch with one of my coworkers I asked her what was her opinion on the topic of abortion and religion. To my surprise as a Muslim sister, although coming from a totally different faith she had the same views as I did when it came to women making decisions about their bodies. She also stated it was against what she was taught growing up in Islam but she couldn’t get past her belief that women should still be in charge of the decisions they make about their body especially when facing difficult situations such as rape or abusive relationships, etc. It was sort of refreshing to know that I wasn’t the only one struggling with this. So many people don’t understand that there is a big difference between being a devoted purist of religion and someone who just wants to live their life with religious
