Since I was little, I love buying journals and pencils. The sensation of holding a pencil and writing your thoughts into the blank piece of paper, I love it. I use to write everything down such as notes, ideas, thoughts, stories and maybe the occasional doodle. As cellphones and computers started to be a necessity than an occasional use in my life, I transitioned to writing everything down on a piece a paper to typing. Honestly, I didn’t even notice this transition from writing to typing. Now, if I need to jot down an idea or a reminder, I use my phone. If I want to jot down notes or write papers, I use my computer. Occasionally, I use paper but my main resources are my phone and computer. Nevertheless, there is nothing like having a fresh

While many strive for technological advances, others are worried that technology can take over cognitive skills in human beings. From watching television to strolling on the Internet, humans are starting to depend too greatly on technological devices and are losing the importance of the malleability of the brain. Because we depend too greatly on technology, people will start to lose the concept of face-to-face interactions, enhancement of relationships, critical thinking processes, and writing abilities. Michaela Cullington’s neutral perspective on technology in his article, “Does Texting Affecting Writing,” gives a plausible argument: that texting has minimal effect on students’ writing through their awareness of knowing not to use the “texting language” in their formal papers. I argue that people should not use text messages as the main source of communication –since texting affect negatively towards young students’ ability to write a concise, formal paper due to the excessive use of…

Taking notes is never an exciting task, but since it’s forced upon us, it’s been facilitated to help future generations be as successful as possible. With these new accommodations, come options such as computers, notebooks, tablets, and videotaping. While studies have shown that more information is retained when writing by hand, I believe that typing notes saves time in order to write to most possible to be able to go back and reread and study. I agree with the statistics about taking longhand notes, but also that I could save time and reduce pressure by typing everything. When it comes to reading, which is a solemn activity, I prefer a physical book as opposed to downloading one online.…

Why Longhand is Better There has been a long, heated debate in this new era of technology about whether or not a laptop is a better alternative for taking notes than the old fashioned pencil and paper. However, time after time again research continues to favor the side of longhand note taking. Mueller and Oppenheimer (2014) have suggested that laptops might even decrease the effectiveness in which we learn and can have negative consequences on our overall learning experience. The two conducted three separate studies which showed the advantages that longhand note taking had over a laptop.…

Then it came the technology of typewriters and computers. One moment I recall from my middle school year was that each student was required to take a class where they would teach us how to type properly and use different programs. Now being in college when it comes to my writing. All my writing is done on a desktop or laptop. It’s very rare when I write with paper and pen.…

In these two essays, two authors talk about their opinions of writing. One talks about how cursive is beneficial to the brain, and the other talks about how hand writing is no longer needed because we have technology. These two authors both have valid points on the subject, in my opinion its great to use both handwritting and technology. I do agree that hand writing makes us remember things easily rather than typing. Growing up our teachers always had us writing notes in class.…

Crazy is the word I choose to best describe my life currently. Being in college is hard, then again, going back to college in your thirties with the spans of a decade between classes is potentially exhausting, if not grueling. My story is a classic, hardly unique, that many others could write it as well. After graduating high school, I started taking general education courses at my local community college to get them out of the way before enrolling into more degree specific courses.…

The above scenario is a true story. Or rather, it is a composite of many true stories. Hundreds of students in my course on teaching writing K-12 have come into my office (or sat in class or written in their notebooks) and made similar proclamations—I hate writing, I 'm a bad writer, writing scares me. Note the course topic: teaching writing K-12. Mari and the other students telling me about their fears and hatred of writing are not freshman in their first college-level composition class.…
