Why I Lived Through Poverty

Decent Essays
Honestly, I lived through poverty. My family used to live in Mexico; I remember everything I didn’t had. I realized I want a family someday. That was my wake up call, am I going to be able to support them? Am I going to work in a minimum wage job, barely making it every week? I don’t want to be rich that’s not my goal, I want to just be able to support my family, I want to wake up every morning next to the love of my life. I want to come home for dinner and not have to worry about having food in the table, not eating someday because we have to pay the mortgage bill the next day. Not looking up for every Pay Day. That’s my goal in life. Everything about you will leave this earth, except your family. That’s all we leave to this world.

Living in poverty is hard and stressing; that’s what I learned from playing the simulation “Spent”. Before playing this simulation, I thought that poverty is easy to overcome, just get a good job and don’t spend a lot of money. After playing this simulation, though, my thoughts changed. It’s actually hard to not spend a lot of money. Gas, heating, electricity, health care, food, transportation, insurance, cell phone coverage, and shelter are all necessities that a person from modern times needs, and these in total cost much more than a person living on minimum wage has money, and I experienced how it’s like living like that.…

Although classified by multiple set of measures, most recent literature has universally recognized different theories of poverty (Dalton et al., 2011; Anand and Lea, 2011; Sun & Sun, 2012; Pridemore, 2011; Alkire & Foster, 2011; Lustig, 2011; Walby et al., 2012; Ravallion, 2011; Azariadis, 2011; Spears, 2011; McBride Murry et al., 2011; Collins, 2011; Walker & Day, 2012). Astutely, most of social theory researchers have been able to differentiate between theories that root the cause of poverty in individual deficiencies as seen by the conservative and theories that lay the cause on broader social phenomena as seen by the liberals or progressives. On one hand, a quasi-collective set of beliefs perceived poverty in the American society under…

While coming to America, two out of the 14 relatives that applied were selected from the immigration process. My father, grandfather and I came with the clothes on our backs.…

I come from a poor family. I never had brand-name shoes or video games, or even a Lisa Frank binder and stickers like my friends at school, but I always had plenty of food in the fridge at home. My family never went hungry in spite of the fact that we were raised by a single mother who made her living as a coffee shop waitress. I did not know, till I was a teenager, that my mom bought the majority of our groceries with food stamps. It never seemed odd to me that she went to the grocery store one time a month and stocked up on milk, sugar, lunchmeat, chicken legs, hamburger meat, and most importantly, coffee.…

Individual theory of poverty as known as the expectancy model is the focus on the individual’s responsibility and who they are as a person. Individual theory of poverty looks at how society sees these people as a human capital, loss of sense of control, and physiological deficit.
