For someone to be deemed insane, there are many things to be considered. For one, the person must have the “inability to distinguish fantasy from reality”, they also must be free from mental derangement; having a sound, healthy mind. The traditional test of insanity in criminal cases is whether the accused knows the difference between right and wrong following the “M’Naghten Rule” from 19th Century England. Hamlet is a sane man throughout the entirety of the play. It was his consistent cleverness that is the ultimate evidence of his complete sanity.…

    Hamlet Art Or War Essay

Hamlet is not just “an allegory of our time,” but it is an allegory of all time. While I tend to agree with Goddard, it’s only because of how sweeping and broad his two “forces” and “choices” are. With imagination or violence, one could contend that if any violence—whatsoever—is absent, then only one’s imagination is left, and vice versa. And his reasoning for war of a “pressure of events” is spot on, but this leads me to a disagreement. I disagree in his unbridled claim of their only being a binary choice between “Imagination or violence” and “Art or war.”…

Is Hamlet truly mad or is his “antic disposition” simply assumed when advantageous? Numerous scholars argue that is was all a clever act, continued to the end of the revenge tragedy. Despite the fact that he states it is all a plan, "I essentially am not in madness, But mad in craft" (Shakespeare 183), his actions speak differently. Though he would be the last to realize it, he becomes the duplicitous, mad individual he has feigned. Hamlet, though sane in the beginning, becomes mad due predominantly to the immense burden of ambition.…

Hamlet 's indecision and continuous delay of Claudius 's murder until the end is explained through several concepts of psychology, delving into his innermost thoughts which act as the driving forces behind his behavior, actions, and attitude towards other characters. Despite being dead set on getting revenge for his father after he met 'his ghost ' in act 1 scene 4, Hamlet soon began contemplating suicide in his ‘to be or not to be’ soliloquy…
