I hate testing. Some of my classmates may respond to this by saying that I always do good on them. And while that is true, that does not take away from the fact that I still hate them. As I sit here at 9:30 p.m. beginning my fifth attempt at writing a good essay that is due tomorrow for a formal assessment grade, I am stressed. And this is how it goes for nearly every test, whether it’s an exam or a chapter test for my geometry class.
Since I just began high school, people have been telling me about the importance of doing well on the exams we take each semester. I already knew this, of course, but I realized that they were more important than I thought before. Part of it makes sense for obvious reasons, but at the same time I can’t stop thinking about how unnecessary standardized testing and exams really are. Think about it: every year students take standardized tests for only two subjects, and then a month later they have to take another big test in every one of their classes in the span of …show more content…
The world’s problems can not be solved using formulas. We have to learn to think. Assessments teach us how to remember, and art teaches us how to think.
I am not saying that testing should be taken away at once. I just believe that standardized tests should be combined with exams. Since standardized tests show the state how the school is performing, why can’t we put those in place of our english and mathematics exams and not take the regular math and english exams? Doing this would result in less stress faced by students. Teachers could then give study time in between exams instead of having them close together. Studying for one test is easier than studying for two or more tests.
In conclusion, I believe that the testing system in our schools does not prepare us for our future or accurately measure our intelligence. We should not be taught how to remember, we need to be taught how to
