Why I Hate Marching Band

Decent Essays
I hate marching band. Leaving that trap of a class was the best decision I made in my entire high school experience. Once I had had enough of band, I joined theater. Joining theater fit my schedule well, introduced me to new people, and opened my mind to possibilities I hadn't considered before. The time I wasted in marching band was grueling. At school by six am, marching drills until first period, only to stay after to play at the football games so we wouldn't get home until midnight. I would become so tired, physically and mentally, that I would come home and collapse at the end of the day. There was so very little time left in my daily routine to do anything. There was no time to properly take care of myself, I'd become sleep and food deprived. I never had a sufficient enough amount of time to do homework, and it was reflected in my grades. …show more content…
In theater you get the choice to stay after, and when you do, it's fun. We build intricate sets and rehearse emotional play scripts and audition for new shows to perform. Amongst all of the chaos, there's always time to break away and work on your homework, or to hang out with friends. Actually, it's funny I should say that, many people I know say that they met their friends in marching band, I met no one. I didn't have the chance to attend the summer practices and when I showed up on the first day of school, not a single person talked to me. I am unable to name three people in marching band that I know from being in marching band. I never once felt like I belonged there. There's this family mindset in theater that is unrivaled. I joined theater three weeks into the year. As soon as I walked through the door of the classroom, I felt a change in the atmosphere. The entire class was welcoming and friendly. Within a day I knew everyone in the class and I felt like I truly fit

In my opinion, my desire to be a state thespian officer could be summarized by my childhood girl scout troop’s mantra which was “Wherever you go make it a better place when you leave”. The arts programs over the course of my entire public education have served me well and continues to. This love for theatre has stemmed all the way from 1st grade Annie with my debut role of Kate the orphan to now an over 50 cast of Beauty and the Beast. I believe that the best way I can repay this debt back and make theatre a better place is through being a state thespian officer. Without theatre, I truly don’t know who I would be and I would like to do my best to not only improve arts programs across the state but, also bring the arts to those less fortunate improving theatre for all from when I first entered it all those years ago.…

Marching, learning all the sets, playing, and step offs. For a few reasons i've gotten yelled at for a week. One whole week I bled, sweat and breathed marching band. Becoming a member of any school activity is an amazing path to building friendships and character. The more involved I am, the more I can improve. One such activity that I actively involve myself in every year is the school musical. The musical cast works very hard, but the days and hours we practice interfere with some school clubs I take part in. This doesn’t stop me from everything.…

Marching band is enjoyable most of the time because many of my friends and I are in it. Many people who are not in marching band tell me to get over the pain, or they just do not care. The pain is then not as bad when people understand. Also, what I mean by pain is, having…

Though I am grateful for my midwestern upbringing, I cannot deny the pushes and pulls of the heritage that propels me to look beyond Milwaukee. Every year my family has two Thanksgivings. We have, what you could call, the “traditional” American Thanksgiving then we do it all again the “Dominican way”. This tradition is something that represents both parts of my ethnicity really well. My mother is from the west coast and was brought up in a very traditional European manner.…

Life isn’t easy and you have to work very hard to get what you want. I remember working very hard to do my very best at an audition for symphonic band. After marching band we have the option to choose between being in concert band or being in symphonic band. The difference between these two choices is that the symphonic band plays harder music and you have to record yourself playing something assigned by the band teacher. Completing this was a struggle for me because I made many recordings and I didn’t know which one sounded best.…

The moment I decided to join the band was in elementary school when our class went to watch the middle school band play their Christmas concert. Although several of my friends had told me that classical music was dull and only useful for putting others to sleep, I loved listening to it. I would try to figure out what instruments were played and their individual part. I was glad to be able to listen to a live band without the need of speakers or headphones.…

Although failure can be upsetting or even discouraging, it can be used as a wonderful learning experience. Failure at some point is inevitable, but it you have to make the most of it. I have been fortunate enough to be the drum major for my school’s marching band both my junior and senior year. We have yet to start competitions this year, but last year was not ideal for me as a leader or the band as a whole. We start rehearsals for our competition show at the end of June; this is usually about two weeks after the school year has ended.…

I joined marching band too, but that's another story altogether. At the end of seventh grade there was no question as to if I would stay with the clarinet or not. What does theatre mean to me? As I review the questions provided for me to include in my goal statement, I feel lucky to express how theatre is unique to me and how I structure my everyday life around the dramatic arts. Anytime I act, I relish in the opportunity to be a leader, to help people, and to accomplish my actions with confidence. I started off with this philosophy at an early age and have not forgotten about it since. In my opinion, acting is not solely about the individual’s performance, but about how an individual actor can use their confidence and passion to impact other actors, enhance a production, and inspire the audience.…
