The higher you get in math or science the more all the complicated equations, no matter how seemingly different, come together. It begins to become more about actually solving the problem than it does the process of how you got there. True, I may not be a science major but even I know there are still certain equations that just don’t fit with the problem you’re trying to solve. The idea of a limited subject being presented to us in the form of a formal, often very overused theme has become what is normal. So learning to limit that subject ourselves is a nightmare. We are constantly asking ourselves: What is the most interesting topic? Is there enough information on it? Would the teacher be okay with my choice? What are we even supposed to write about? It is the last one that really shows the issue, isn’t it? Because if we don’t know what to write about, then how do we write at all?
This mindset is the number one destroyer of a good student. It is what high school has ingrained and what college is trying to fix. However, they can’t truly fix it without a little help from the students. Whether we have somehow managed to survive the Four Hell Years mentally intact or if we are simply willing and able to start fresh, it is up us to take back our learning. And to do that we must first take back our homework. It’s about time we start doing assignments on our terms. Be interesting, fun, positively ridiculous as long as you enjoy it.
