I think this connects back to Roman times in which german tribes were seen as “barbaric” by the romans while they were the same color. Color, therefore, is simply an obvious distinction used to justify your dislike of the differing cultural and ethnic origins of minorities. People can resent people of color’s success because they know that their ancestors came from Africa and looked and behaved a certain way tying them to barbarism. So if they look physically similar and behave with similar cultural mannerisms, white people might obviously associate these aspects with slavery and are frustrated with their perceived trying to unseat
