Why I Failed Calculus Failure

Decent Essays
I failed calculus 2 the first time I took it. I heard for years from classmates and friends that calculus 2 was one of if not the hardest course offered at the school. A math major friend even tutored me the semester before, and I thought I was prepared. Unfortunately, the course lived up to its reputation and despite all the forewarning and planning I could not grasp the concepts or deal with the workload. My GPA fell and put me on probation and my subsequent appeal was declined in some sort of triple whammy. The only blame is on myself but the silver lining is that this series of unfortunate events exposed the critical flaws in my school plan which up until this point was auto-pilot. Returning to school was by far the most significant challenge

Middle school can be an odd and rough time for kids, as they change from being sheltered youth to responsible young adults. I failed miserably at handling that transition. The classes taught in middle school were supposed to be easy, especially now that I look in retrospect. Yet, I regularly brought home B’s and low A’s, at best, on my report card. I had barely challenged myself in middle school, if at all.…

I still played around, didn’t apply any effort in classes, and was so sad and mad at myself that I couldn’t get any work done. I use to blame teachers and say things like “She didn’t give me enough time to study” “I don’t remember talking about this in class” or “I wasn’t here” but all along I knew that it was all my fault, and I am the reason why I have a failing grade, not my teachers. Mostly I would wait ‘til the last minute to get final work done, and sometimes it will work other times it wouldn’t. Unfortunately I had to attend summer school, and I failed 3 classes. It finally hit me that I have to get it together or my future might not be so bright.…

Recount an incident or time when you experienced failure. How did it affect you, and what lessons did you learn? Failure is not unusual but having the courage to get back up and fight for what I believe in is indeed unusual. Much earlier in my studies, I have surmounted tremendous hardship which caused me to drop out of college.
