I don’t get a lot of chances to get out of the house. I am a full time stay at home dad and student. My children are 2 years old and 7 months old. My program for school is entirely online, I had one class that was 3 weeks long that I drove over an hour to get to just so I could start my other classes on time. Needless to say, I don’t get very many opportunities to encounter ego boosters or busters. Before I was a stay at home dad and student I tried out several different jobs. One job was working at a factory. I was a welding technician. My main responsibilities where to ensure that the robotic and spot welders ran correctly. I was somewhat in a team lead position but not a supervisor. I had an instance where I was coming back …show more content…
Most places want former military so I met all the requirements to become a “Custom Protection Officer” for a well know security group. I was very excited to try this new line of work despite not getting paid very well. After meeting with the area supervisor, he said that he had a perfect site for me to work at. It was the Dayton Metro Library. Yes, the library required a security guard. At first I thought it was joke, or maybe it was to enforce parking laws, maybe track down over due library books. Ending up the library was in a very bad part of the city and had a massive problem with the homeless and drug users. During the days, the local shelters would close and the homeless would have nowhere to go, so they would come to the library. It is a public building but they would come in and try to sleep. We also had issues with people brining alcohol and drugs in. I had to do hourly contraband searches of the restrooms and common rooms. I found hidden knives, liquor bottles, prescription medications you name …show more content…
It wasn’t as big in size as the main library so it only had one officer, but was in the highest crime rate in the city. The branch manager was a little old lady named Winnie. I looked up to Winnie, she was a former daycare teacher then became a librarian. Just because she was a former daycare teacher and now ran the library didn’t mean she was soft. She took pride in her community and library. She told me the very first day that I worked with her that she would handle any patrons and that I was there for her safety if things got out of hand. Working long hours I got to know more about Winnie and her family. Her son was a veteran and had fought in Iraq. He had really bad PTSD and ended up getting sent to jail for armed robbery. We had a healthy working relationship and I could confide in

In the story Something Wicked This Way Comes, Ray Bradbury symbolizes the library as a death trap for the Dust Witch which expresses her fragility. This can be seen through, “The Witch toppled forward”(Bradbury223), “The Witch pulled back the merest quarter inch as if some strange but hidden electric light socket, touched with wet whorl, gave shock” (228), and, “ ‘ No!’ The Witch protested”(229). The library acting like a safe haven for the Halloway’s and Jim causes the Dust Witch to be fragile on such safe grounds because she is used to having the upper hand. The library makes her fragile because she isn’t used to being somewhere where she doesn't succeed in her duties.…

Enoch Pratt, a wealthy business man, donated over a million dollars to opened a library in 1882 in Baltimore with goals that it will be free for everyone regardless of their background. Carnegie admired Pratt for his generosity, “Mr. Pratt has done more for the genuine progress of the people that has been done by all the contributions of all in terms that people could advance from generous wealth contribution to society can help them realize they’re capable of helping themselves instead of expecting handouts. And rich people to help those who cannot or will not help themselves” (Carnegie).
