Reflective Essay Of My English Class

No matter where you go or went to school, you always have some type of English class that forces you to write papers. These papers usually has to be a certain way or over a certain topic. To me that was a pretty big problem for me because I could do free writing easy, but when you tell me to write about something that I don 't have any interest in and I have to follow your “rules”, then I will just try to blow it off. I have always hated the way Professors and the world had this “image” of their version of a “perfect” essay. I always messed up on the rules like where to put my commas or semicolons, that to me is the hardest part to not have a run- on sentence. I still struggle with this on a daily basis.

My first class at Greenville College was Core 101 and the professor Mrs. Estevez. One of our assignments she made us do was an analysis paper. When she explained this assignment to us, the whole class was confused. The reason that the whole class was confused was because she would explain it one way to one student and then explain it a whole different way to the student. The analysis paper was supposed to be 3 pages long and double spaced. While writing this paper it was very frustrating because no one know what they were specifically supposed to write about. One day in class we again asked our professor what she wanted for this paper and how she would grade us. The whole class was so confused at the end of the class period and the professor was so frustrated that she just decided to end class and walk out of the classroom. To this day I am still confused on how she wanted this paper done. Doing this essay made me feel stupid because obviously I couldn’t follow her the “perfect” essay because I just didn’t understand. It made me think is this how every College paper is going to

Freshman Composition I’s course objective was designed to help students “focus on developing and expressing ideas clearly and effectively to communicate with various audiences for various purposes and occasions, through written, oral, aural, and visual venues by means of individual and team projects.” Throughout this course my classmates and I reviewed principles of the writing process, including: planning, logical organizational, development strategies, revision, and editing, we were also introduced to rhetorical techniques and vigorous library research. With those techniques, this course has helped my classmates and I develop critical thinking skills like: summary, paraphrase, analysis, evaluation, and synthesis of multiple sources. Before I began this class my writing process consisted of simply being assigned as assignment by my high school english teachers and coming up with an essay at the top of my head that properly fit the space requirement and prompt that I would then turn in the day it was due.…

The transition from High School can often times be very frustrating for students. L. Lennie Irvin opened my eyes to one of the bad habits I picked up on in High school. The habit of straying from the topic or theme could cause me to fail not only papers in English but my other courses as well. I personally had a hard time with English my first semester of college. In High school I was always at the top of my class and my teachers would tell me how great of a writer I was.…

I remember the first time I wrote an essay that was being graded at the college level. This was in my junior year when I took AP Language and Composition, our first essay was a rhetorical analysis essay from a very old excerpt that used old english and was very hard to read. When I first started reading the passage I started to get nervous because I didn't understand what the text was saying but then I started to annotate and the passage began to make sense. I found many rhetorical strategies that the author used and I then began to outline the essay in my head.…

I walked into the classroom of my last class of the day expecting to just take notes and listen to a lecture. Unfortunately for me, the teacher announced that we were going to write a timed essay based on a chapter of a book we were reading. This task did not seem challenging at first, and the thirty minutes we were given to write our essays seemed like plenty of time. Nonetheless, I still managed to turn what was supposed to…

The teacher was not worried about what punctuation errors I made or what grammar mistakes I had. The teacher would only worry about how my cursive looked, if it was neat, and if I wrote the correct way. Then in seventh grade, the only requirement from the teacher was for us to find the plot of a book, a chart, or to determine the climax of the book; nothing to really help me build my skills as a writer. So when I was asked to write an argumentative essay in eighth grade, it was probably the hardest thing I ever had to do. I still to this day cannot write an argumentative essay.…

It was a cold, winter morning. The frigid air blew as I turned to pull the handle on the door to the main building of my small high school. After entering the doorway, I dragged my feet across the floor and trudged through the empty hallway. As I peeked through each of the door windows, I saw nothing but dark, empty classrooms. It was not until I looked up that I noticed one lit room at the end of the hall.…

This semester has flown by; however, English 101 has shaped my writing in so many ways. It was sometimes hard to think of the right topics that I was able to write 5-6 pages about. I did research and made lists of things that I was going to be able to elaborate on and overall create a decent paper. On the definition essay, I should have chosen a better topic other then, “Dreams.” Of course we all know about dreams, but it was hard to define it, when it could mean two different things. I ended up writing about both of the meanings, which didn’t end up so well.…

Dear First Year Writing Assessment Committee: In this letter, I will explain my learning outcomes and experiences with my essays for English 1010. English 1010, defined by academic standards, is to develop in first-year college writers a deeper understanding of the complexities of writing through instruction and guided practice in the skills, processes, and strategies necessary for effective, successful writing. In my past semester of English 1010, I was able to demonstrate my abilities to be an effective writer and enhance my writing skills through guiding essay projects. I do believe my abilities were improved in topics including: finding the author’s purpose, explaining ideas, revising, editing, proofreading, organizing the structure of my paper, and etc.…

Before entering English 101, I was not sure what to expect in my first college English. Prior to English 101, I have been taking several English classes, but each class helped me little by little to an English 101 student. Learning to have efficient studying habits such as study the day of the class and not doing things last minute. Also learning how to actually study other subjects and how to think critically. This has increased my learning habits. My student habits have changed dramatically,…

Throughout this semester of English 101, writing has become more of a skill than a struggle. Writing was a challenge that I dreaded when I chose to be in the course, nonetheless with time, I learned from my mistakes and was able to improve. This course made me very doubtful on whether I could be capable of even writing a paper that would provide me with a decent grade, but at the same time made me push myself in my writing technique. In the end, I can reflect that I learned from my mistakes and wrote papers that took time and dedication to accomplish. I learned from this class to be confident in my writing and make all the mistakes to receive the grade I want in the end.…
