Reflective Essay: Improving Writing Skills

This year’s English course has been more challenging than usual, I am generally accustomed to doing well enough without really trying or learning in English courses. It’s possible that I may have succeeded in improving in my writing skills so far this year; I better understand how to use sentence length, my claims are stronger than they were previously, and my grade appears to be improving. My OCE essays were completed in multiple drafts. From very rough, to slightly less rough, and then to nearly spotless. Although I will admit that I don’t always use class time because I can’t concentrate well enough to write at school, there are too many sights and sounds. I need a boring environment in order to concentrate on writing properly. From my first draft to my last, sometimes the general idea would change, and other times the paper would simply be cleaned up a bit. Depends on whether I understood exactly what was asked of me. On the last OCE essay, the Argument #7: Frankenstein I received my first eight. Some things that I did well in this particular paper was details and variety. I know now that this isn’t an easy class, it takes quite a bit of free time, class time, and good ol’ hard work to even begin to succeed in AP Language and Composition. That’s why I can feel so satisfied with my one eight, I’m proud to have done so well in such a difficult class. This score also is hopeful to me, I am hopeful that I can master some of these skills and that I may be able to do this well or better on future papers (and keep my GPA up!).
