I was surprised to find out that nurses were assigned one patient each. As the day went on I realized how much of a work it actually is of taking care of not just a mom but the infant too. The patient we had was tested positive for Methadone and nurse did an exceptional job on observing and saw some bruising on the forearms that set off some red flags. Patient declined on doing any illegal drugs or taking any over the counter drugs. She was also a smoker and that could be heard by auscultating her lungs which produced bilateral wheezing. It was patient’s first pregnancy so the nurse did some basic teaching on what to expect during contractions and delivery. Since the patient was positive for Methadone, she was on an IV drip for it to ensure that she doesn’t start showing signs of withdrawal and also so the baby wouldn’t show go thru it either. Honestly I would not like to work on this unit simply because I genuinely think you cannot bring exceptional care for a mother and a baby as a male nurse. In this unit the patient really looking for modesty and compassion thru this unique time of their life and I believe as a male nurse I wouldn’t be able to provide that essential piece of care for them. I learned that on this unit it is really important to have a good relationship and understanding amongst nurses and doctors.
