Why I Deserve A Scholarship

Improved Essays
I am currently a sophomore majoring in linguistics with a minor in elementary education at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. Although I am an in state student, the tuition is a burden and I didn't qualify for any need-based aid so I am dependent on outside scholarships to help me in funding my education. I feel that I deserve this scholarship because although it might sound cliché, I worked hard to get into a top high school which prepared me to get into a well-known university. I took honors and AP classes all throughout high school because I wanted to challenge myself and I am currently doing so at my university by maintaining above a 3.0 GPA. I don't want finances to be the reason I can't continue my education, and I am determined …show more content…
I am an aspiring Linguist whose goal is to one day facilitate the lives of the many immigrants that are flowing into the country. I have recently changed my major to Linguistics from Architecture because I felt that I had a natural ability to acquire languages. I am minoring in Elementary education with hopes to one day teach ESL classes. Everywhere I go, people have asked me why all of my friends were "foreign" and it is because I love cultural diversity and want to be a part of the whole world. When my friends teach me words in their native languages, a spark lights up in me and it makes me feel accomplished. I have a passion for learning about our neighbors in this constantly diversifying country. I think that one day I can have a huge impact on someone's life through teaching and cultural immersion. I would like to earn scholarship money, because my parents are currently paying on a deferred payment plan and they are still struggling to make on time payments because, like a lot of people, we do not qualify for financial aid, nor can we afford to pay the tuition. It is also very hard for me because since my parents are struggling to afford my tuition, they cannot afford to send me spending money so I have to work which takes away from my time to study, get help, and do my homework. If I received scholarship money, it would lessen the burden on me and my parents' financial situation, and would allow me to stop working and focus on getting my degree so that I can change the world one day. I know that I will succeed in my reaching my goal because I have a plan and I will stick to it. This is what I want to do with my life and I will not only accomplish my goal but I will exceed

I feel like I am a good candidate for this scholarship because, as a senior, any and all money earned and received will help me ease the burden of attending college. My goal throughout my whole childhood was to receive a full ride scholarship to the college of my dreams; however, as time has gone on and I have matured I have come to the realization that, that dream is not as achievable as I once believed it to be. Which ultimately means I am still responsible for paying for my books, room and board, part of the tuition cost, and mandatory fees.…
