In 1917, Loretta Walsh became the first woman to enlist in the United States Navy. Flash forward to modern times, Defense Secretary Ash Carter makes a dire call to the military to allow women to assume any and all combat roles. Eradicating the gender barriers set forth by previous generations. As a young woman nearing the age of adulthood, I am at crucial point. Should I follow in my parents footsteps or explore the exhilarating world of engineering? I have always admired people who are willing to sacrifice everything for the sake of their homeland. People who are conscious of the fact that they are part of something far greater than themselves.
Growing up, I always had an interest in both science and math. I didn’t fit the conventional standards of what being a “girl’ was. When I was younger, I had peculiar infatuation with ships and what kept these colossal vessels from capsizing and throwing its passengers over board. Every weekend my mother would drive through the marina and I would always beg her to stop. Bargaining to eat my vegetables if she would only stop for a few minutes. I would marvel at the grandeur and splendor each individual ship had. Minutes turned into hours and soon enough my mother was heaving me over her shoulder. …show more content…
It has shown me the broader applications of the skills I’ve already developed. We are currently working on electrical circuits, and are soon to start coding. The exposure to electrical engineering grants me the ability to implement the learned skills if I were to take said class in USNA. It would build on the skills already present. Thus allowing me to progress at a quick and efficient pace. Bridge building reinforces the ability to cooperate and allow for communication between team members. It shows a student to persevere through the tough times and try again. In the end, life is all about trial and
