Why I Chose To Be A Nurse

My parents had me at an age where they were a little bit older than most. My life has been pretty ordinary. I've grown up in a good home with a family full of love and support. My whole life I've been fortunate enough to never experience hitting rock bottom or a devastating situation. My life is pretty uneventful, but one thing my parents have instilled in me for years, it's that the medical field would be a job for me. When people would ask me what occupation I wanted to do when I grew up, I would say, " a princess." A pretty generic answer for a five year old girl not knowing what she wants to do when she grows up. However, to this day I don't remember ever saying that I wanted to be a nurse. All I know is that my aspirations in life have remained the same for years. …show more content…
It seemed like a done deal from the beginning, I would go to a nursing college after high school and that would be the start of life. To my family and I, it was the best route to go by, since being able to care for people is something I enjoy. Just knowing that you are able help people when they are in need leaves me with a good feeling afterwards. My parents had found a high school that offered an amazing internship at Sharp hospital that was hands on and allowed me to work with Healthcare professionals and create a special bond with them. It's offered to every grade level and has really allowed me to find myself in what I exactly want to do in the medical

Dear Carolyn Boles Scholarship Committee, I have had a great first semester in college full of learning and meeting new people. I studied extremely hard the entire semester and was determined to get the best grades possible. My favorite class was psychology and I received a very good grade in the class, so I was asked to become a mentor for the class next school year. I also decided to work toward receiving a minor in health psychology because I loved the class so much. In another one of my classes, we learned about different health field careers in order to decide if nursing was right for us since it is such a competitive major at IUPUI.…

I have been asked many times why I would ever want to be a hospice nurse. I get strange looks when I tell people it’s my dream job. I get the same reaction from most people, they get big eyes, jaw slightly drops, and they always suggest hospice nursing must be one of the saddest jobs created! I’ve wanted to be a nurse for as long as I can remember, and have felt called to hospice. As a young girl I wanted to be a baby nurse, and wanted to bring babies into the world.…

In my perfect world people would live healthy lives; they would always pick the healthy option rather than the cheap more convenient one. Free clinics would be more readily available for the homeless or less fortunate. The public would be interested in precautions on how to prevent the spread of diseases and illnesses. Realistically this is a challenge that our world faces and is one of the many reasons why I want to pursue a degree in nursing. My desire to enter into the medical field and become a nurse stems back to when I was an adolescent; I can remember watching Dr. 90210 do multiple surgeries on patients and I can just remember myself saying “I want to be able to make people feel good about themselves, no matter what.”…

In order to expand my understanding and advance my practical skills in looking after patients with haematological disorders, a professional nursing body I would need to join is the Cancer Nurses Society of Australia and receive specific training in administering chemotherapy drugs (Clinical Oncological Society of Australia, 2008). As a result, receiving competency will ensure that chemotherapy medications are stored appropriately, adequate training in the management of adverse events, safe preparation, handling, administration and disposal with accordance to professional and legal responsibilities is upheld (Cancer Nurses Society of Australia [CNSA], 2010). The specific education and training modules that are necessary for administering anti-cancer therapies can be accessed through the…

After working as a computer programmer for 13 years, I found myself without a job when I was laid off as jobs were outsourced to countries outside of the United States. I thought it would be relatively easy to find another job, but soon found the market was saturated with new graduates willing to do the same work for less money. I decided to get my CNA license and work in the medical field. I loved working with patients and decided to jump back into school and pursue a degree in nursing. Although there have been nights with little sleep, tears, and many meals of scrambled eggs, grilled cheese, or cold cereal, I have never regretted going back.…

“My people hath been lost sheep: their shepherds have caused them to go astray, they have turned them away on the mountains: they have gone from mountain to hill, they have forgotten their resting place” (KJV Jerimiah 50:6). A compass is believed to ensure guidance to a lost individual, no matter if you are a sailor lost in the Pacific Ocean or an explorer walking through the Amazon Forest; a broken compass does not provide guidance if you are lost. For this I believe I am a broken compass because all of the directions that I am receiving in my life are leading me down the wrong path and I do not know where I am going, but that broken compass can be fixed. Growing up as a child, my family already had my educational life mapped out; it was simple, go to college and pursue a career in nursing. I was fine with that because I am interested in setting that as my life long goal.…
