Why I Chose To Be A Mentor Essay

There are a few different reasons I feel I am qualified to fulfill a CA position; I have experience both in being mentored as well as mentoring. I have worked as a functional member of a team environment in my highschool, social, and work space environments. I have faced struggles that give me a calm head in hard times and that is one of my major qualifications when becoming a CA. Throughout my middle school years I was in a program with Colby College where a student attending there would come and talk with me, or play games, or whatever they saw as necessary. I was an extremely shy child who showed little to no interest in socializing with my peers; giving me a mentor for three years was how they looked to solve this problem. When it comes to my friends and club involvement I proudly accept that I am the “Mom friend”. I periodically find myself checking in on the people around me to make sure they’re doing okay in their lives. If they aren’t, or if they come to me as many do, then I make it my goal to go to every extent I can in order to help them. This can range from staying up with them so that they can express their feelings and receive advice if they’d like to, to contacting counselors or the proper authority figure that can more effectively assist. In my senior year of highschool my class went through the unimaginable tragedy of losing a classmate to suicide. It hit everybody hard and we found ourselves talking more deeply with each other about how we were feeling. At one point a friend of mine told me she was thinking about killing herself. The next morning I sat in the guidance office and made her a series of appointments before her thoughts could get any worse. As far as this making me qualified I think it portrays my cool head under the extraordinary pressure of a delicate

My junior year in high school, I became a student mentor in our campus’s peer counseling program. This was an incredibly rewarding experience as I had the opportunity to help freshman students assimilate into our high school dynamic. As a peer mentor, I assisted students with personal problems and mediated issues with teachers in order to maximize their learning experience. I also acted as a role model for my mentees by talking frequently about AP and Honors courses and how to be successful in such programs. I put effort into learning about each individual's interests and goals so that I could expose them to clubs and academic courses that they may appreciate such as the Biomedical Academy or our school’s robotics team.…

Before addressing why Pitt is a good choice for me, I would like to review why I am a good choice for Pitt. The University of Pittsburgh values their “talented, diverse and high achieving students”, their “safe and healthy campuses”, their unique balance of “fun and camaraderie with internships and other learning opportunities outside the classroom”, and their focus on “developing students into global citizens” (University of Pittsburgh webpage, ‘Prospective Students’). I am a well-rounded student who places priority upon academics, as well as a broad array of performing arts extracurricular activities, over 300 hours of community service, several job experiences and religious organizations. Therefore, if admitted to The University of Pittsburgh, I would fit right in with the ardent and accomplished student body, just as I would benefit as a person and as…

Everyone can say that they always imagined or wanted to look up to someone whether if the person was famous or related to them. Throughout my teenage day I’ve always wanted someone to mentor me and show me things in life that I can one day use in the future years to come. I didn’t want a mentor that was a few years older I always wanted someone that was almost twice my age, maybe even older than me. My mentor that I will be talking about name is James. James and I met at my job throughout my time working there I have worked with many managers.…

My favorite job by far has been my internship as a career mentor in the Office of Career Development at my school. As a career mentor, my primary duties are to help students with resume/cover letters, job/internship search and just general life goals questions. This internship has made realize why I love working with students. It’s such a great feeling when a student comes and they may be confused about their major or how to make a resume for a job; but by the end of the your time with them, you just see this light bulb go off in their head and they have this look of “I understand”. Even though it may be a very small interaction, I feel like I have made a small difference in their lives and I have helped them somehow.…

Howley Discussion Board: Mentor This week 's discussion board will focus on the type of mentor I would like to work with at some future point. I would you like this mentor to possess qualities I find to be important like; sharing a vision, modeling the way, and becoming a transformational leader. I would like to work with a transformational leader. Transformational leaders, through the creation of an empowered workplace, encourage creativity and critical thinking (Gokenbach, 2014). I am a peculiar individual. Never caring about my own reputation, but rather preferring a life that helped others. Always thinking about my purpose in life, I came to the conclusion that the greatest joy in life is helping others achieve a higher standard in life. This included sacrificing and helping those around me in order for the world to be a better place. Even as a future physical therapist, I strive to provide individuals the possibility of regaining their range of motion.…

Before I started my summer practicum, I attended counseling with Beth Budesheim. From here, she helped me gain more self-awareness from my past, my current thoughts, and future goals. Based on my past situations, she assisted me in becoming aware of how my dyslexia, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Generalized Anxiety Disorder, and past childhood experiences can help me provide empathy for children, adolescents, adults, and elderly, who are experiencing the same learning disorders, anxiety/depression symptoms, Depression, and negative experiences. More importantly, Budesheim pointed out how my love for the profession will benefit me in my future goals in becoming a stronger counselor. She pointed out how I become depressed when…

Throughout high school, I was never the kid who got out of their comfort zone. I went about my entire four years talking to the same group of friends and only focused on getting good grades. This has come to be one of my biggest regrets. Looking back, I wish I had gotten involved in clubs around campus and even sought out leadership positions in these clubs to not only develop my leadership skills, but also make important connections with my peers. At the time, I didn’t realize the importance of getting involved.…

Moving from my home in Hockley, TX, to my current home in Plano, TX wasn’t the easiest of transitions for me. Hockley was where my closest family reside, the people I knew growing up, the ones who raised me when my parents were either working or attending college so they can get a job to support me. The ones who played video games with me and, taught me how to fix a fence or mow a lawn. Or take me outside to the field in my great-grandmothers yard and play baseball or football with me. And, where my best friend and others who I cared deeply about lived.…

I originally thought that by just being there for someone you were a mentor. I now know through this program that mentoring involves giving both tools and advice to effectively help your mentee. The relationship with a mentee is somewhat different than a relationship between friends. There is a sort of bond that occurs from helping the student but the student holds you to higher standards than a friend would. I am excited about mentoring next semester because I want to hone my mentoring skills even further be able to help my mentees in a more effective way.…

My mentors during undergraduate and professional training taught me that learning is a process of personal growth. As a teacher and mentor at the University of North Carolina, I have come to appreciate the profound impact that my own teachers and mentors had on this process. It is now clear to me that I succeeded most when my teachers developed an interactive, safe, and intellectually stimulating mentoring environment. By allowing me to ask questions and attempt to answer those questions myself, they pushed me to flourish as a student, understand the process of learning, and develop as a person. I now try to stimulate my trainees in the same fashion, urging them to identify the basic questions they have and to engage in the pursuit of answers…

When writing an essay for a class, one does not think about his or her past experience with writing. Whether that experience was good or bad, the lessons learned from those experiences are now in his or her brain, therefore this person automatically knows what to do or not to do in most cases. Something else one does not notice anymore about these reading and writing lessons, is that they can be translated into life lessons. Many of my reading and writing experiences have somehow taught me a life lesson at the same time.…
