I went to the same private school from first grade till tenth grade. For my last two years of high school I chose to go to Lenape Tech, the technical school in my school district. This school gave me many options of study such as cosmetology, carpentry, welding, biomedical, and various other options. I chose the allied health/sports medicine shop. This not only gave me training in physical therapy but through it I became certified as a CNA. With help from the teachers and faculty I discovered ways that I learn best, because of this I developed a desire and love for learning. One of the first things we learned was medical terminology. Medical terminology included abbreviations such as “a” meaning without, “pt” meaning patient, or “RNA” as ribonucleic acid. It also included definitions such as “-itis” which means inflammation, “-algia” means pain, and “nephro” meaning kidney. We were given new lists of words every week and at the end of each year a final about them all. I had to memorize these terms because many of them we would later use when learning in class. I used different techniques to remember all of these. Mnemonics, flashcards, and writing the terms many times. I always did really well on these because of my preference of memorization. Another time memorization came in handy for me was when we were learning the skills for the CNA test. We were given a booklet my teacher referred to as the “CNA bible.” This book contained practice quizzes for the written half of the test, but more importantly it included step by step directions on how the skills were to be done. It also bolded certain steps. The bolded steps meant that if that step was skipped during the skills test, you would automatically fail. When practicing these steps, I would not only practice them over and over, I would write them with different wording many times. This method of memorization helped me to remember them in the correct order when it was test
