Studying Sociology will give me a number of transferable skills I plan to gain, examples being environmental awareness, communication, and critical evaluation which will help me later in my career. Recognizing how environmental awareness influences other people either at work or home can help sociologists understand them. I will gain the initiative and passion to further research in the Sociology field. With the degree from Kent, I will continue the subject to the PhD level and further myself in a variety of fields such as being a sociologist or teaching. As a sociologist I will study both western and Britain society on various levels, an example being to explore race, ethnicity and sex as well as the intersections between the three. Going into the teaching profession would be a brilliant continuation of the sociology field. Having an interest in teaching since primary school, it would be a great decision to teach after my degree from Kent. It would be exhilarating to teach future sociologists in the field as well as learn from the students since teaching is a learning experience for both professors and students. Obtaining a postgraduate degree at the University of Kent in Sociology will absolutely advance my future career, setting me apart from my colleagues in this

One consequence that I specifically came to college for was the ability to get a job and be part of a group of coworkers. Having a degree will enhance my ability to get a job and be able to work as part of a group or team. I will go to work everyday and be a member of my coworkers group which will only be possible upon earning my degree. This concept also relates to social stratification in that a person with a degree is more qualified and would therefore receive a higher position of power and prestige because of it. Another consequence of attending college and earning my degree is that I would be able to maintain or even improve upon my current social class rather than decline.…

    1. Four main issues I presented in this video are race, sex, socio-economic status, and culture. The video appeared to have an overall framework of African American men, stereotyped into a single group of limited income, inept, as well as suffering from mental illnesses. I believe that it portrayed the worldview of most of white America in an accurate way. According to our textbook, worldview is defined as, “our psychological orientation in life and can determine how we think, behave, make decisions, and define events” (Mio, Barker, & Tumambing, 2009, p. 8).…

While there have been many books that have made a lasting impression on me, In Search of Respect: Selling Crack in El Barrio, an ethnography read in my Cultural Anthropology class, fall of my sophomore year is still one that stands out to me. This was the first ethnography that I have ever read, causing me to be fascinated with the study being done. Reading about Philippe Bourgois’s experience of living in Harlem during the crack epidemic, made me realize the extreme negative effects that unemployment and poverty can have on a population. It was eye opening to learn why these individuals, who are looked at as cold hard criminals, were pushed to do the things that they did to support themselves and their families. This ethnography touched upon…

Sociological imagination is the “ability to see the impact of social forces on our private lives” (p.18). People have different views upon life due to their sociological background, meaning where they were raised, ethnicity, background, culture, and family. The factor I will focus on throughout this paper are my status, social experience, and specific…
