Why I Chose Public Education

Improved Essays
“Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself,” said John Dewey. I have lived my entire life according this principle – as a student and as a teacher. I believe that experiences changes us, and I seek extraordinary opportunities. As a student, my favorite educational explorations include Junior Statesmen of America Summer School at Georgetown, British Studies at Oxford, Space Orientation for Educators, and GLOBE (Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment) Training. As a teacher, my experiences are equally varied. I have invested myself in public education, the homeschool community, and the Christian education arena. My involvement gives me a unique perspective.
I have been a teacher my entire life. As a small child, I “played” school; of course, I was always the teacher. Even as early as the sixth grade, my teachers noted my natural gift for

I desire a Specialist’s degree in Educational Leadership and Administration from Florida State University. I am very interested in Dr. Gawlik’s focus on teacher quality and her seminar on prospectus development. As a private institution, it is important that Rocky Bayou Christian School maximize and emphasize its ranking as a top private school with quality teachers. Additionally, Dr. Blackwell-Flanagan’s emphasis on leadership preparation and effectiveness would equip me to lead an organization where the administrators are few and, therefore, their roles are many and their influence is great. FSU has made a name for itself across the nation as a premier institution for training teachers and administrators. The College of Education is known for its excellence and is, therefore, my first choice of the many programs of study available to

After last week’s writing, I found myself in quite a fog of insecurity. Thankfully the most recent installment of YITE brought me back to the sunny side of teaching philosophy. Reading about the art of teaching was rather inspiring even. The quote from the text, “approaching instruction in a variety of ways to provide multiple paths for students to both learn the content and develop the skills of the curriculum is artistry (pg 147),” caught my attention. Often in my life I have gotten the impression that some people consider the position of a teacher as that of merely a figurehead, an adult to put in front of a group of kids to keep them occupied.…

Each person has his or her individual path to follow, no two paths are exactly the same; but, every now and then, paths interweave and people construct bonds with each other. In the case of Sonny and his brother, the narrator, in James Baldwin’s short story, “Sonny’s Blues”, their paths were parallel with one another until they grew up. Sonny left the slums of Harlem, aspiring to become a musician, while his brother settled in Harlem and became a teacher. Although the narrator and his brother ended up with completely different lives, the narrator being a family man with a teaching job and Sonny, an ex-convict playing jazz at a club, are ironically more similar than they are portrayed.…

I grew up in a small, rural community in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. Recently I returned to visit my high school where I saw my former band director. He asked me an interesting question; one I had never been asked before, “What is the most important thing you have learned from your experiences?” Without dwelling on the question much I replied, “People are more similar than they are different.” I surprised myself with this blunt statement that streamed out of my mouth.…

Yet literacy rates before then, before compulsory public schooling, are estimated to be around 90% to 98%. Men such as Abraham Lincoln, Samuel Langhorne Clemens (Mark Twain), and Frederick Douglass were able to educate themselves and move on to contribute greatly to society without the benefit of public education in any form, as did most Americans in that era(Sowell, Inside 18-24,27). In fact, in many countries today, countries such as Switzerland, where it is estimated that only 23% of its citizens attend public high school, have the highest income per capita in the world and more scholarly individuals in comparison to other countries. This is generally attributed to the lack of public education (Murray Real 33,34). The same show similar literacy rates to that of early America, where little was available in the way of public…

"After Apple-Picking" 1.The irony of the lines show how the speaker has become very sick of his job of apple picking. The reason I think you may have been drawn to this line so much is because even though you have wanted to teach for so long, since high school, you may have grown dissatisfied or bored of the repetitiveness of teaching over the years. I think the apples symbolize the years that the speaker has grown sick and tired of the repetitive work he has done.…

Becoming an educator is one the noblest professions an individual can go into. A teacher can have a powerful impact in a student’s live, both positive and negative. Teaching is one of the few careers that directly affect the future of our nation, and though this may be considered a cliché, the truth of the matter is that you may have a larger impact on children’s lives than some of their parents. You spend hours upon hours with your students, whereas busy or career-driven parents may not have the same opportunities. Becoming an educator is conducive to your home or family life, allows you to see the potential in students, and perhaps most notably, provides the opportunity for you to essentially mold lives within one short calendar year.…
