There are many reasons that have contributed to my decision to pursue Nursing. Starting with science and learning all the fascinating things the human body can do, then through my volunteer work, but there is one personal reason that made my decision to become a nurse a certain one. This reason is the passing of my younger brother due to Trisomy 13. I was only eight years old but I knew in that moment that I wanted to help people in need. I never want a family to go through what my family went through. This event in my life shaped me into who I am today. It is the reason for me wanting to specialize in neonatal and pediatrics. I want to help these tiny humans who can’t help themselves and to reassure the parents that their child is in the best hands. …show more content…
While I have not been able to volunteer there so far I am scheduled to volunteer 18 hours in March and I couldn’t be more excited to be involved with patients in the Austin area and to continue volunteering there in my free time. Throughout my career, I have heard about the “nursing shortage”, but I was not aware of the impact on the future, as I now know. Working most of my career in the hospital, I was not aware that nursing educators were subjected to the similar budget cuts as hospital nurses witnessed. The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (2017) wrote, “budget constraints, an aging faculty, and increasing job competition from clinical sites have contributed to this crisis” (pg. 1). Through the years, many have encouraged me to further my education because of what opportunities that doing so would provide me. I was satisfied with what I was doing, so the pursuit of a higher degree was not a priority to me.…
