My draw to nursing comes from an innate desire to help people and care for them in their times of need. My nature has always been caring for others, helping friends solve a problem or just listening to them. I wanted to join the volunteer program because I enjoy helping people. My first day as Patient Assistant at Beverly Hospital I met an elder woman who was having surgery on a clogged artery. She told me about her husband who passed away a few months prior. Before he died, they spoke about how she would know he was okay. They believed in messages from the afterlife. Her husband told her when she sees a bird that she should think of him. It was to be her sign that he is okay. A few days before he died, she received a stuffed bird from him and he told her to hold it when she feels alone. She seemed excited to show her bird to me. I felt so privileged to be comforting this patient before her surgery. She seemed so happy to tell me her story, and I was certainly happy to hear it. As Patient Assistants, we usually pop in out of rooms bringing water, extra blankets, or just be a person to talk to. This patient gave me a greater lesson than I could have ever expected. When I thought back on my first day over the next months, I realized that this is the type of person that I want to be around in my daily
