Why am I not applying for law school? When I graduated high school and on up to my third semester of college, I was a Political Science major determined to go to law school. I even created a vision board with the list of school that I was going to apply to. Now, three years and three major changes later, I find myself applying for a Masters of Arts in English at Wayne State University.
English began to alter my plans during my first major specific class. Prior to my Children’s Literature class, I thought an English degree would limit my future opportunities. I grew up believing that English was the major you add on to your “real” major as you prepare for law school. As a result, I did not expect to gain much from this class. However, as the semester progressed, I found that I was taking a theology sociology, and political science class

I was introduced to Wayne State University when I heard about the school’s programs for students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Although, the specific program I heard of was for students interested in law school, I was still intrigued by the University’s efforts to assist students like me. In addition, Wayne State University has one of the few English programs that I believe will aid me in achieving my goal to earn a Masters and eventually a Ph.D. in English. At this moment, I am unsure of what I would like to specialize in. I have been fortunate to have a diverse undergraduate education that has aided me in developing an interest in African-American Literature and Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies. As a result of the schools offerings, and other factors such as the schools’ location and diverse faculty, I believe this University will properly prepare me for all I hope to

Appendix A: English Major Inventory 1. What attracted you to become a student at UMUC? There are two reasons, the first is that all of my classes transferred from Prince George’s Community College and the second is that the cost is lower than UM. I also have received several scholarships such as the President’s scholarship, the transfer scholarship and in the fall of 2014 a scholarship from Phi Theta Kappa so my out of pocket costs for education when I have completed my Bachelor degree will be roughly $10,000 which is pretty good for seven years of academic study. 2.…

Students should be required to take courses in minority or ethnic studies as part of all college degrees. The unique value of ethnic studies in colleges and universities is that these studies promote respect and understanding among races, support student success, and teaches critical thinking skills. Ethnic studies by and about racial minority groups presents a different narrative that is shaped partially by histories of oppression in the United States. as well as by the intellectual and cultural resources and traditions of those communities. Ethnic studies evolved from the demands of Black Americans for an education that is relevant and meaningful, that affirms their identities and selfhoods, and that works toward human liberation.…

I have always enjoyed Shakespeare and I had experience with it in high school.…
