After taking the HUM 270H course and learning about leadership and volunteering, I have decided to change my major. I will now be majoring in Nonprofit Administration. When deciding what I would chose for my service learning project I wanted to incorporate something that I could connect with and I would enjoy doing. For my project I made goals and planned out the activities, I learned more about myself and the community, as well as how this project connected to concepts learned in class. I wanted to leave the Our Lady’s Inn with a better understanding of how a nonprofit organization worked and I wanted to make a connection with the children, to let them know that so many people care about them. My time at The Our Lady’s Inn was unforgettable. …show more content…
Not only would I plan activity for the set day (Tuesday, November 22), but I would leave an activity book with the teacher to do activities with the kids at a later date. I had to plan an activity that would keep the children entertained, while also not make a huge mess. I chose to do the activity Disguise a Turkey, I felt as if it was perfect for this time of year. I printed a cut outs of turkeys, and then the children would have to decorate the turkey so he looks like something else, so he doesn 't get eaten for Thanksgiving dinner. I bought feathers, plastic eyes, pipe cleaners, colored cotton balls, and all different art supplies for the children to decorate their turkeys with. I then asked student senate, and members of PTK to join me at Our Lady’s by sending out a google form allowing them to sign up. The google form asked other students if they would like to participate, the time they would like to participate, and if they would be carpooling. My goal was to have at least one student for each child at the home. As the time got closer I talked more with the coordinators at Our Lady’s. They informed me each person helping with the kids would need a background check. Unfortunately only two students responded, (Kaytlyn and Noah), who were interested in joining my …show more content…
Watching the video “Tasha the Monk” was a very pivotal moment for me. That was the exact moment I knew I wanted to change children lives. I wanted to help the less fortunate, and I would do this by being a servant leader. I knew I had to build a team to help me serve the children at Our lady’s while also being a leader who would impact their lives. My team of Kaytlyn, Noah, and I were very successful in meeting the goals and outcomes I planned for the project. Our small team of us three joined in with the Our Lady’s staff while serving the food and cleaning the kitchen. The passage “ The Secrets of Great Groups” really helped me understand what I needed to do as the leader of the group. I needed to provide my followers with direction, and give this project meaning. The passage states “Members pay a personal price,” and I really realized that when serving at Our Lady’s. The group of staff members spend their days, nights, weekends, and holidays with a group of women and children who can’t provide for themselves. They provide a home, food, and safe place for these women and children, when they have families at home to take care of as well. Noah was very skeptical at first. He did not think he would do well with the children. I encouraged him he would do fine and just try his hardest to make the children happy. A concept we learned was to imitate change and help others adjust

As revealed in my resume, I am a proud member of Plymouth High School Dance Marathon, an organization that fundraises money for Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis, Indiana. For the past three years, I have had the privilege of partaking in the raising of funds for this exceptional Children Miracle Network hospital. In the past three years of my involvement, I have played a distinct role in our collective donation of $85,000. However, this large sum of money did not come easy, and allowed me to employ the use of my leadership skills. When we were only a month away from last year’s Plymouth High School Dance Marathon, we were a whooping $20,000 off of our goal.…

The school that I have decided to try to do service learning at is Westside Elementary in Springville, Utah. Westside is a coed public school in the Nebo School district. I grew up in this area and attended this school growing up and I felt it was a great school to attend. The Nebo School District's mission statement is "we engage, empower, and collaborate to ensure student success". The school received a 5 out of 10 rating and the neighborhood is quite large, but for the most part is quiet and has a low crime rate.…

For members of the speech team Ashley asked them each to write down their goals at the beginning of the year, held them accountable to these goals for the entire year, and pushed them to take them even further, “The servant as leader always empathizes, always accepts the person but sometimes refuses to accept some of the person’s effort or performance as good enough” (CITE 4 FRICK). In my own relationship with Ashley she has always pushed me to be the best possible person I could be. She never expressed judgment towards me when I failed to hold myself accountable to the things I wanted out of my life, but promoted me to do better and provided me with encouragement and a basis of support to improve on my own failings. As a servant leader Ashley makes those she lead more autonomous and stronger in their own life. She also provided them with the building blocks to become servant leaders…
