In my case all of these questions are related. My purpose is to teach, being a bagpiper has given me the opportunity not only to teach but so much more. I want to impact the world of piping in every way possible, but mainly, through my effort to grow our art in the US and around the world.

I learned at a young age that I wanted to teach and I have taken every opportunity possible to do so. Since then I have been inspired to learn, practice and help others. Through my current studies as a musician I have learned many different styles of music from Jazz and Classical to piobaireachd and folk music.. My high school instructors have provided several occasions to tutor individuals and teach full classes. Within my pipe band I hold the rank of corporal and instructor, my duties include teaching tunes, tuning the band prior to performance and reviewing sheet music before distribution to the band. I have been very lucky to have a great pipe instructor, Derek Midgley, to guide me through competitions where I am a grade 3 piper. To be a teacher would mean I would be able to pass on all of the knowledge I have learned and that is very important to me. Thus is why teaching is my life purpose.

Each person has his or her individual path to follow, no two paths are exactly the same; but, every now and then, paths interweave and people construct bonds with each other. In the case of Sonny and his brother, the narrator, in James Baldwin’s short story, “Sonny’s Blues”, their paths were parallel with one another until they grew up. Sonny left the slums of Harlem, aspiring to become a musician, while his brother settled in Harlem and became a teacher. Although the narrator and his brother ended up with completely different lives, the narrator being a family man with a teaching job and Sonny, an ex-convict playing jazz at a club, are ironically more similar than they are portrayed.…

This, followed by my experience of marching band and my eventual learning of piano sparked a period of introspective thought, and mental growth, that transcended to where I am today. Never in my life did I think my hard work and dedication inspired by Mr. Williams words would land me at Interlochen Center for the Performing Arts Boarding School. These words became a core part of what I am, and from freshman year on would encourage me to never set a limit on my potential, and my overall worth.…
