To Become A Straight-A Student

In part one of “How to Become a Straight-A Student” by Cal Newport the main of this story is how to not to work and study for twelve hours straight, to show how to manage your time doing some simple things and help you avoid the urge of procrastination. The five ideas that resonated with me was making a “To Do List” and a “Things to Remember Column”, to feed my body with nutrients, tell others of your work and go to an area where there is no one you know, plan the hard days in advance, and to study at least an hour straight and to rest from time to time. Making a to do list resonated with me because it showed how easy your day can be with this idea. Just like in the story of Stephen, Newport said that “Stephen was able to really relax and have a good time at night.”(Newport, ) This stood out to me as a reader because it showed that the list actually worked for someone and that it might work for me. This idea connected with me because it is something so simple and it will make everything easier for me in my daily life for me to get everything in order. What I will do to emulate this idea in my life is to make a to do list in …show more content…
This resonates with me because it will make it easier for someone to plan a day of full hard work and have no distractions at all. The idea stood out to me as a reader because it shows that when you plan something you are going to prepare for it. This connects to me because you will need to “prepare yourself mentally” (Newport, 49) and by planning the hard days in advance you would know when to prepare which is what I usually do when I have something difficult the day after. I will use the idea in my life by planning my hard days for important things like the AP tests or my class projects. By doing this I will probably do better on my tests and projects. The last idea of studying for an hour straight than resting from time to time resonated with me

Firstly, the counsellor lists several behaviors that fully represent the element of procrastination such as “Holiday myths”, “Tomorrow Paradigm”, and “Contingencies”. The elements mentioned above are typical characteristics among most of the procrastinating students. Secondly, the side effects of procrastination are failure in both academics and social life since one’s life is not systematically scheduled.…

Have you ever been a victim of procrastination? More than likely, it’s safe to say that everyone has procrastinated at some point in time. For some, however, this tends to become a habit. In “This Was Supposed to Be My Column for New Year’s Day”, by John Tierney, and “The Procrastination Doom Loop--and How to Break It”, by Derek Thompson, opposite opinions are shown in an attempt to defend their beliefs. Thompson’s, however, appeared as more accurate.…

How to Pull an All-Nighter focuses on the narrow subject of pulling an all-nighter for homework, studying, and other things, which is important and has influence in the short term, but in the long-term, the effects of the decision that was made is mostly negligible. The problems addressed in Higher Education have much larger reaching impacts for people’s lives and society. The decisions made about college have long-term effects that can have various consequences later in life. While both passages offer valuable advice, the advice offered in Higher Education is much more consequential than the latter, though it has its uses as…

One of the goals I have selected for myself in this class was not to procrastinate. I found two articles I used for resources. The first article was I’ll Do It Tomorrow: The Logic Procrastination by Lisa M Zarick and Robert Stonebraker. The second was Good and Bad Procrastination by Paul Graham. Both articles talked about different aspects of procrastination, but had the some of the same ways to prevent or help with procrastination.…

Procrastination is something that not just myself, but numerous people struggle with. Throughout this year, I have been in many situations where I have procrastinated multiple things, most of which is homework assignments, projects, and studying. I constantly would make an excuse for why I couldn’t get an assignment done prior to the night before. When in actuality, I had no excuse to not have a project completed at least a week in advance, before the due date. Julian Gordan’s presentation: “No All-Nighters: How to End Procrastination & Perfectionism Forever" talked about ways to to help people get their obligations completed in a timely manner.…

In the first quote, it mainly discusses about how Honors students have trouble discussing and answering questions out loud because we are afraid of saying something wrong or different. I can say that this quote is absolutely true. There are countless times that I feel like I know an answer to a question or I feel like I can contribute something to a discussion, but I am too scared about what other people would think about my answer. I think that Honors students generally are afraid of this because we are worried about saying something wrong. By improving on this fear, I think that in general, people would be less afraid of speaking up in front of the class or contributing to a class discussion because people will be more comfortable about…

These two concepts stood out to me the most because I as a student does procrastination at its best and always forgets about assignments because of my tendency of leaving things for the last minute. When reading about these concepts, it was an eye opener because I never would have thought that high school students lack in one particular skill--time management. As a reader I thought, “What else can high school students lack in?” Which made me connect to my life as a highschool student, I can resonate because I change my plans in the day to hang out which ruins the point of organizing my day. “Time management is critical--it’s a skill that you absolutely must develop over the course of your time at college” (Newport, 19).…

Before I began my Freshman Development Seminar course with Professor Furet, I believed that this class would not be of good use to me. The reason for this was because of my beliefs in self-teaching myself to learn the basics with additional help from other sources. However, it did not turn out the way I wanted it to be. Therefore, I had to pay to get taught what I could have done on my own, at least that is what I convinced myself then and there. Throughout my class sessions with Ms. Furet, I learned more than I could have ever imagined.…
