Why I Aspire To Become An OB/GYN

I aspire to become a OB/GYN. My first introduction into health care was in the summer of 2012 my family and I went to visit our relatives overseas. While there I shadowed my aunt at the village’s general hospital. My first day included watching my aunt and other doctors preform a C-section and help deliver a baby via natural birth. To explore the health care system, I took advantage of programs my high school offered. In 2013 I worked my first job at Beth Israel Medical Deaconess Center in the HCA (primary care) department during the summer. I did not have any patient interactions, instead I opened mail and helped nurses make packets. I did not enjoy my time with the program and decided not to return for the following summer, but I did not get discourage and tried different hospitals and departments. In November of 2013 I applied to a program at Brigham and Women’s hospital called SSJP that I found about through my high school. I was placed into the Pain Management Center and I have been with them until I finished high school and my first summer after college. As a first-generation Somali-American Muslim college student and I am very accepting of others cultures and religions as I would wish others would be to me. I have been raised to respect others opinions and beliefs and treat others the way I would like to be treated. I am also very interested in learning about other cultures and college is the best place for me to learn. I have made friends with many people from others countries and their share their culture with me. Being respectful to others is important because in class or work we will have to work in groups with people we may not know very well. I would like to grow in integrative learning and use what I learned at Simmons in the outside
