I will be a Junior this upcoming academic year at Michigan State University,

where I am studying Biomedical Laboratory Science. I am an undergraduate research

volunteer in Dr. Eran Andrechek’s Laboratory in the Department of Physiology where we

are examining the mechanisms involved in the development and progression of breast

cancer. We do so by targeting genes via a combination of bioinformatics and genetic

modeling with the goal of eventually impacting the treatment of breast cancer. The goal

of the research project is to better understand breast cancer heterogeneity and apply this

knowledge towards developing rational therapies.

As the second leading cause of cancer in women, nearly 1 in 8 women in the

United States will develop invasive breast cancer during their lifetime. It has been

estimated by the American Cancer Society that 232,000 new cases of breast cancer will

be diagnosed in women in 2015 and roughly 40,300 of those women will die.

This large death rate is due to a high degree of diversity within breast cancer

tumors; in fact, the disease has been characterized as a collection diseases with unique

molecular drivers under the same classification of breast cancer. To understand the

heterogeneity of the disease, researchers have characterized breast cancer based on gene

expression to 6 subgroups. A well characterized chemotherapeutic drug approved by

FDA in 1998 known as trastuzumab has attempted to hinder this problem. The drug,…
