Explain three reasons why you are interested in becoming a DNY Peer Leader.*

The main reason I am interested in becoming a DNY Peer Leader is due to my love for New York. I spend a lot of my weekends simply adventuring through the city. It is one, if not the, main reason I decided to attend St. John’s. I want other students to be excited about the area they attend college in. And understand that there is a whole world of opportunity out there, even just within New York. Beside this reason, I believe this position is something that will allow me to expand my understanding of New York. Even though I completed the course and have a good amount of knowledge of New York, there is always more for me to learn. This course is something that is unique

Describe what you perceive to be the role of a Peer Leader and how you would perform such a role if you were selected A DNY Peer Leader is a person who has knowledge of the MTA system of New York, can motivate and excite students, and understands the benefit of cultural awareness. New York City is one of the most diverse cities in the world. It begins with our campus. If I were selected, I would use our campus as a prime example to describe the cultural diversity of the area we live in. As a peer leader, I would stress the importance of being culturally aware. And how lucky we are to go to a university like this. In relation to New York and its surroundings, the location of this campus is prime. Sometimes I wonder why, out of every city, town, and suburb in the entire country of the United States, my grandmother chose to move to Lynn, Massachusetts. A city otherwise rich in history, but unluckily dubbed over by an ingloriously annoying jingle, “Lynn, Lynn, city of sin, you’ll never come out the way you came in.” I heard it chanted through elementary school hallways, mocked by middle school kids, and hummed by high schoolers. You would think its omnipresence would keep away travelers, but, then again, my grandmother didn’t speak English. She came over from the Dominican Republic thirty-six years ago, with my mother and her five other kids.…

I’m interested in becoming a Peer Academic Leader because I have a passion in helping my fellow students succeed. One thing that two years at a community college and three semesters here at UNCG has taught me is that college has its ups and downs, but it really helps if someone is there that can be a guide when things get tough. Being a Peer Academic Leader is an important job because coming to a four-year institution the size of UNCG might be overwhelming to some students, and they might not know what resources they have at their disposal, so as a Peer Academic Leader I would be the person they could come to when they need help navigating around campus, around Greensboro, or help navigating the resources they have available to them. As a transfer…

I love volunteering, and like I noted earlier, I do not have a specific charity that I like volunteering for, I just simply love giving my time and effort to others. I love to do charitable things for others, and I hope to continue to practice my leadership by setting an example for others in my community. I will likely continue to donate my time, or canned foods to the Flint Hills Breadbasket whenever I can, and participating in charitable activities that I do with my church or life group. Another leadership role I see myself having, even though it does not relate to charity, is being a Peer Educator for first year Architecture students. I am very interested in being a leader to students that will be going through what I went through this year because I feel that I have valuable advice to…

Leadership, a term used by many to describe the action of leading a group of people or an organization, but leadership within the community through the youth holds a much larger role in modern society. Martin Luther King Jr. describes the importance of communal leadership saying, “life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘what are you doing for others?.” I believe that leadership is not necessarily wielding authority but it is crucial to empowering members within the society to work together to solve many problems we face. By being a part of the Peer Acceptance Leadership Skills (PALS) program, I believe it is the necessary link between connecting high school youth to the community to help empower those who with disabilities, those who…
