"I am a success today because I had a friend who believed in me and I didn’t have the heart to let him down" -Abraham Lincoln
I would like to participate in the bridges to success program because it will assist me tremendously in my journey to a better future. Without the program I would encounter financial adversity and go through the tedious process of achieving my educational goals alone. On the other hand, with the program, I would have a constant day to day reminder that someone believed in me and because of that, I was able to get to where I 'm at, and for me, that is more than enough motivation to keep me going. No matter what obstacles I may face, I would persevere because, otherwise, I would feel like I let a valuable opportunity, that only

My freshman year of high school was one of the most difficult, as it is for many people. I was trying to adapt to the new feeling of independence that was gained and the workload that came with it and I was also, simultaneously, trying to find my place in life and discover who I am. Who do I aspire to be? Where do I see myself 10 years from now? What do I plan on doing after graduation? These are just a few of the questions that were thrown my way by my teachers, my peers, and myself almost daily. These were the questions that haunted me and kept me up at night. They were always lurking in the back of my mind and I always had the same answer for all of them: I don’t know. That was all I could say, I don’t know, so I took it upon myself to ask my friends the same questions, but the outcome wasn’t quite what I had expected. They all had a plan or at least had something figured out for themselves. This made me feel worse than ever. I felt as if I was falling behind in life and so instead of taking action, I chose to make

In 2010 I was a person who was unsure about all the aspects of my life. I felt as if life had no meaning to it. I was afraid of what the future held for me due to the fact that it never seemed to be clear to me. I had no education goals whatsoever, I was extremely unmotivated to succeed in life. I never valued anything that I had, that being the love my family and friends gave me and all the personal belongings that my parents provided me with.…

For the past year, I could only provide an indefinite answer to a frequently asked question, How was your freshman year? In fact, those of us who experienced our freshman year could be addressed as “college veterans” will never initiate a conversation with regard to the past year. Perhaps they consider that the freshman year was not as consummate as they initially planned. I cannot judge my first year in college was successful or frustrating, but I feel I benefited from the meritorious experiences and practical knowledge gained from my college life. In my opinion, no matter what goals one wishes to achieve in college, whether its grade, love, health, or sense of accomplishment, one has to be prepared for both failures and…

In the Spring of last year, it was my Junior year, one of the most critical years in high school. It’s the year that colleges look at the most, also it was the year that I was in some of the most challenging classes. Mostly honors, a lot of homework, and tests to go along with it. Studying would take me until late at night, and even on weekends, all day long. When it’s the end of the term everyone checks their grades for their report cards, and progress reports.…

In Ian Frazier’s essay “In Praise of Margins,” he sees marginal places and activates valuable. The very word marginal to Ian Frazier has a simple meaning of a “negative tinge” (Frazier) where it is defined as actions and decisions that are non-goal oriented, or without purpose. In Frazier’s Own life, a marginal activity and a place for him and his friends were out in the woods as it was there “part-time address, destination, purpose, and excuse” (Frazier). However, growing up Frazier and his friends had the woods as their marginal activity which was often seen by society as unbeneficial. But, from an academic perspective, I agree with Frazier that marginal activates are important.…

As a child, everything in the world seems so clearly black and white. It seems like everyone just naturally gets older, goes to college because they have to, and work wherever they and up. Then I myself got older and started to question: But why do I need to go to college? What’s so great about it?…

Growing up in Hiram, Georgia, I never imagined myself at a high school in Wisconsin, but, oddly enough, I did always have a feeling I would end up at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Something about the atmosphere of Camp Randall drew me to the television for every Badger game. The red and white sea of people at the stadium would put me in a trance. As I became older and learned more about college, Madison continued to stand out because of its programs, its marching band, and its campus. I’ve always done well in school.…

I didn’t not know what I was expecting. On the first day of high school, I stepped into a crowd of students, waiting to enter the building that would become my second home for the next four years. I didn’ not know where I would stand among these highly accomplished individuals, or if I would even amount to the standards set before me. Self-doubt began to fester inside of me as soon as I stepped through the front doors. I expected less and less of myself as time went on.…

People close to me had always told me that every year is very important and to try my best. Trying my best was not my priority. My priority that year was about my friends who only cared about fitting in too. The transition from middle school to high school was difficult for everyone, but greatly for me. I realized my classes had more homework, more tests and had a tougher curriculum than in middle school.…

Everyone’s motive to finish school and get a decent job, whether they know it or not, is to be “successful” and financially stable, but after being told that so many times I notice some of us lose sight of our real dreams. Getting an education becomes the task that blurs the fine lines of what you really want, and so some of us end up in jobs we hate because we only looked at the amount of money that job pulled in. Rather than doing what we love and loving what we do, we sacrifice our time, ironically our money, and happiness in order to make more money to achieve what’s left of our goals for those who still hold them high. Aside from the repetitive, monotonous, and progressive difficulty of the curriculum of reading, writing, and arithmetic, school has taught me more than what was intended.…

My Motivation: What motivates me the most to pursue a college degree is that I will be the first person in my family to receive one. My grandmother is the backbone behind this motivation because she was always making sure that academics came first in my life. There was rarely a day that I would come home and she would not ask me questions about my homework, asking what I learned in school, or even looked over my homework. As I got older, she made sure I was a part of a college prep program called AVID from 6th-12th grade and that definitely made a difference for me. It helped me understand the importance of continuing your education and how beneficial it can be to succeeding in life.…

As soon as I was in middle school, I wanted to be one thing, a singer, I had decided that I liked singing enough for it to be a career, although my vocal range disagreed.…
