Personal Narrative Essay: Time Is Money In My Life

Improved Essays
Time is money, or the only true currency, that’s what people say. I have learned throughout life that this is true; and that, like it or not, time and money are our two most important assets. Growing up as a child sometimes with very little money, as my (then) single mother worked to keep food on our table; I realized that hard work and persistence through difficult times is what pays off in the end. I also know that time is valuable and it needs to used doing things that will serve you and your future. I know now, at 27 that that is what it takes to really succeed in the world. Success to me isn 't necessarily monetary, but a feeling of pride in what you do, what you have accomplished and knowing that you have the skills to accomplish even …show more content…
It was around that time that I began struggling academically due to stress at home. It was the beginning of the housing crisis in the United States and my Father is a residential real estate agent and my mother was a stay at home mom who was raising my younger brother who has Aspergers. The level of stress at home was at an all time high and I was not equipped to handle everything that was suddenly put on my plate, such as working and paying for my own car and “fun” expenses, trying to balance being on the golf team and school work. I had a part time job I went to Monday-Friday after school and worked some Saturdays as well. My grades began to slip as I spent as little time at home as possible due to work and not wanting to be around the stress. I don 't blame my parents, and I know that they were doing the best they could at the time. I think my own immaturity led me to withdraw not be able to cope with the situation and stay focused on what was important. Although I had always imagined going to a 4 year university right out of high school, my low GPA made that nearly impossible. So I decided with my parents that I would go to a community college to raise my grades before transferring. Unfortunately this did not go as expected. The financial troubles and stress of my parents at home had only worsened and they were in danger of losing their house. That on top of working almost full time as a marketing assistant at a title …show more content…
I was unsure of what I wanted and had lost confidence in myself as a student. However, once my friends were beginning to finish college and go out into the real world, I realized I needed to also do what I had alway planned and get my education. Watching my parents struggle financially and eventually lose their home has made me work hard to provide for myself and to save for my future so that I do not have to struggle that way. After a few years of just working I knew that I needed to make a change. By this time I had already gotten myself a new job with the company I am currently with, and after a few years of hard work and promotions they encouraged me to go back to school. They have even been willing to work with my schedule to some degree. This, and the motivation to succeed long term and move up in my career has brought me to where I am now. I have still struggled trying to juggle full time work and school, but my grades have sufficiently improved as well as my study habits and my drive. I study now because I want to actually learn the subjects, not just to pass a test. I know that many of the things I will be learning in the business school will be applicable to the job I have now, as well as any I have in the future. I have already taken TBUS310 and am Taking TBUS300 right now and am learning so much. I enjoy the atmosphere at UWT as it is very different

I think success is something entirely different. A teacher enriching the lives of countless students can be a success. A bank teller can be a success. Contrary to societal beliefs, you do not have to be a household name in order to be considered successful. I started attending Lone star college right after high school, at first, I began with the typical high school graduate state of mind, which was that college was going to be a breeze and that it would all be fun and games; more worried about what was going on in my social life rather than studying the books. Especially since I had no real responsibilities to handle or much life experience. Around my first year of college, I started dating this girl and not long after we conceived our first son. Once this happened, my focus slowly shifted from school to working a full-time job at a welding shop in order to provide for my family. I still tried to attend class but was unable to find the balance between work, school and family and this reflected my grades.…
