Whether you were brought up in the far North or the Deep South, in a Christian home or Agnostic, or in a Caucasian or Hispanic home, there will be a bias associated with the way you view the world and the people in it. If not careful to realize this fact, a nurse can cause a patient to build barriers difficult to take down. In my journey to become a nurse, it is important for me to understand myself and be open to learning about why I am the way that I am. Being one who has grown up in a Christian home that exhibits brutal honesty, modesty, and strong principles, I know that my behaviors and beliefs can be a great asset or a great hindrance to the medical field; and I hope to understand myself and my ways better in order to be the great asset that God intended me to be. …show more content…
My communication skills have both positive and negative attributes to them. Because I was brought up in a home that was very straightforward and open about what we thought and felt, I tend to be a very straightforward person. Exercised correctly, this attribute will show my honesty and ability to communicate openly about a situation; but, if not careful to recognize other’s feelings, this attribute has the ability to offend. This upbringing allowed me to learn to listen to other’s thoughts and feelings, because my opinions and thoughts are not the only ones. This allows me to sit down with people, look them straight in the eye, and talk to them as if they are the most important person to me at that moment.
