Any event in life can teach a person something new and help you reach goals. For me, hunting has shown me just that season by season. I started going out hunting with my dad at the age of seven, even though I wasn’t old enough to actually be the hunter. At these times, hunting for me meant wake up, go out, and fall asleep in my chair while dad hunts. Throughout my years of hunting I’ve been able to learn a lot in what doesn’t seem like such a long time.
At the beginning of my hunting addiction, my favorite thing was always watching the woods wake up. Being young I didn’t fully understand how hunting actually worked, (all I’d ever seen before was hunting on tv). If I wasn’t sleeping, I would stare at any given spot and day dream of deer walking through. However, in reality we never really saw that many deer. Sitting there day after day I began to wonder why we didn’t see deer like the guys on all the hunting shows I constantly watched. Hunting never really made me impatient because I loved being in the woods regardless of seeing deer or not. However, one cold

Starting off the same as last year we saw lots of deer. Early bow season came and I had doe permits as well as my buck tags. For whatever reason as soon as I bought doe permits I never any in shooting range. On October 30th, a pretty good sized six point was on a path to a shooting lane and I stood up and got ready. He stayed in cover until one spot and stopped. Unfortunately, where he stopped was behind two trees with a gap between them. Already fully drawn, I took a deep breath and slung an arrow at his vitals. Taking off in a mad dash he ran out into a field. We never found him that night after looking for hours. Deciding to pull out we came back Halloween day. We found my buck in the swamp. It took five years and many lessons in order to reach my

“Killing the Big One” It was just any ordinary day in January and deer season was in full swing. We had been hunting hard all season and I was still yet to get my first ever deer. I was being patient though and not trying to rush things because even at the sight of deer my heart would start pounding out of my chest! My dad would always remind me “You just have to breath and stay calm then aim at the front shoulder and squeeze the trigger.”…

ALTHOUGH RESEARCH CONFIRMS that the whitetail rut takes place at almost the exact same time every year, most hunters know that the rut’s intensity varies from day to day. As much as your head spins with the mental images of scrapes, full moons, rubs, monster bucks, and rut-crazed chase scenes, the best times to be in the woods will rarely coincide with calendar anniversaries. Through years of personal experience and research gathered from other hunters, Cory Wiedel is one of the most accomplished whitetail hunters. He has taken 11 Boone and Crockett– class bucks in the past six years, and he places a priority on going after his scouted target bucks only when he recognizes that the conditions are favorable. “There are certain weather-related…

This season I was ready I had been constantly going out and putting out feed and checking trail cameras, I had put in the extra work that I hoped would let me be the first to change the history of our family property. My Dad and I woke up early on the early fall morning and set out to the woods before the sun started to rise. We arrived to the stand just when light was starting to filter into the field, I was alone he headed back out to the house and wished me luck. I sat for a few hours waiting for deer but none came so I packed up my gear and wandered aimlessly my way back to the house. I warmed up with some coco my grandma had made me and said I was going to head back out after a quick…

The Adrenaline that a hunter feels being in the top of a tree stand waiting for the perfect deer to hunt is absolutely incredible, however hunters are not always lucky enough to find their prey. My dad and I began going around the ranch a day before we went hunting, we looked around to see where the biggest deer’s were located. We tested and align the rifles, to leave everything prepared to go hunting the following day at dawn. We were very positive that we were going to be lucky enough to hunt a big trophy deer, tough the results we had were never crossed our minds.…

But when you are walking in the woods you want to try and act like a deer by how they walk also hunters can do this by walking in a erratic stop and go pattern, but simply most easiest way is to just go with the flow because you will never have the same hunt. Deer are mostly accustomed to hearing squirrels running through the leaves and limbs falling from trees, but if a hunter goes out and doesn’t spray any scent on him to cover him up a deer will smell you from miles away and won’t come to your stand. Deer live in the wood twenty four hours, seven days a week they know what sounds are normal to them and what sounds are not if a hunter makes just the slightest noise of something slamming against metal when you are climbing up a stand the deer will get curious around their territory. Another thing that all hunters should do is not let your guard down because the minute that you do the biggest buck of your life could walk right past you and you didn’t get the shot off, but if you don’t let your guard down you have to be calm and quiet because when you see the big buck your adrenaline will kick in and your heart will be racing so much but everything can happen so fast in a blink of an…

Duck hunting can be very frustrating to serious hunters. An example could be, a week ago Wednesday, when big numbers of ducks were in the Los Banos Complex and averages were well up in most refuges. At the Santa Fe Club near Gustine, limits were the rule as it was in most private clubs. And then Saturday, the bigger influx of birds were gone, possibly due to heavy rain prior to the shoot day. My son Bill, and Steve Hinze, of Aptos, shot at the Santa Cruz Club Saturday, and bagged limits of Greenwing Teal and two snow geese.…

I know this because this is what I would assume today. Again, my childish hope panned out because less than five minutes later the same three deer were back. My dad, who was extremely shocked, told me to calm down and take a long breath, shooting during the exhale when I took the shot. The deer got within twenty yards again. I, being a little more patient this time, slowly aimed at the doe.…
